Can anyone direct me to where i can find info on how the M-20 changed through the 50's and 60's?

Does anyone have any experiences a/b-ing vintage m20's from different time periods? I have my eye on one from the late 60's but i know they've been making them since the 50's so I'm curious..

thx!!

Mines from 1965: What would you like to know ? (Mines the only one I've ever seen, let alone played....) Bear in mind that a late 60's one might be an early Westerly even though the label might say Hoboken. You looking at the one at TME ?

Cheers, Ian

Yup, exactly. I just want to know if that's a good year for m20's? Is that a hoboken or westerly? I know it has a brownish headstock which I thought was a bit odd at first glance...are these common? Thanks!

I recall reading on this board that serial #'s starting with AH were made by trainees in Westerly. I think the SNs without the AH prefix ended in 1964 or 65

Hey guys,
I bought the Guild at TME and i'm quite stoked about it!! :D My first Guild.

I got the serial number from them and it is AH2538...I'm guessing it was made by trainees? Any info would be great, i can't seem to find much online.

Hello ratcab,

That's not exactly how I wrote it up in the book. Serial numbers for the individual years between 1965 and 1969 are not known, but they do start with the AH-serial number prefix.
Production in Westerly was started during 1967 with M-20s and consequently those have the AH-serial number prefix as well, but that doesn't mean that all M-20s with the AH-prefix in the serial number were built by trainees. By 1969 all production was moved to Westerly and the factory was producing all the models that had been made in Hoboken during the previous years and some new ones as well.

Hello soma89,

That particular M-20 was made during 1969 when Westerly production was already well on the way.

As a sidenote...can anyone tell me if this is a vintage or reissue m20? It doesn't look like the recent reissues and almost looks too clean to be a vintage one.

The guitar in the video is a reissue M-20 from the year 2001. It looks different because it's part of a 'limited run' that was done with a different finish.

Sincerely,

I can't get to my copy of The Bible at the moment. How are we defining "trainee"? Someone with no experience being trained to build guitars in Westerly, someone with instrument building experience being trained how it si to be done in Westerly or what?

Frono,

If you read back the thread you will notice that the wording 'built by trainees' was not coming from me. When the production line in Westerly was set up, several of the 'new' workers were actually people with woodworking experience, who had worked for the Orsenigo company. Others were people with no woodworking experience who had to be trained to do specific jobs, for which you didn't necessarely need to have experience ( see History Chapter - Westerly, page 17).
The M-20 and the Mark I were choosen as the models to be produced during this 'instruction' period. When things were going smoothly, production shifted to slightly fancier models.

Sincerely,

Hans Moust

Been very curious about Daniel Lanois' m20. I THINK Neil Young is playing the same one live now. It's something like the one i recently bought from TME (It's amazing btw :D) but it has the larger guild pickguard.

Anyone know what model/year m20 this is (Daniel Lanois')?
