Doing some online shopping for my friend - I am finding that most D25's are going for North of $1,000 these days.

My seat-of-the-pants feeling is that used Guilds started steadily going up in price about three years ago, bringing us to the current point at which they no longer represent the “I stole it!” value they once were. Ah well, even at current prices, they’re a lot of guitar for the money.

It has been my experience that guitars that have been played a lot, beat to snot if you will, are the best sounding guitars. They found their way to serious players and many were gigged heavily. I've played a lot of 60s and 70s D 28s and D 18s, pretty much every one that was on the used wall at Gryphon over a 15 year period. I can not remember one closet queen that was a great sounding guitar, but many beat to crap guitars of the same age that were wonderful. Some of the good ones got played hard. Some of the best had pick marks through to bare wood from countless bluegrass sessions. These are either solid or can be made so. My Guild D 35 is well played too. Age and play time is a determining factor for tone.

I have an 86’ D-25 I paid maybe $500 for because it had a hairline crack on the back of the peg head that looked much scarier in the online pictures than in person but the seller assured me it wasn’t a problem. I had 13’s on it for almost 2 years with no issues with tuning. I wished the neck wasn’t so pencil thin though. I guess they were hoping to get the shredder-in-need-of-an-acoustics money. I recall some 80’s Ovation guitars having pretty thin necks and those were selling like hot cakes so maybe that’s what they were after.

I always thought anyone taking the acoustic guitar seriously should at least try a D-4/D-25. No it won’t sound like your favorite Martin/Gibson but that really isn’t a bad thing as they have their own merits. Every D-4/D-25 I tried had a healthy amount of low end and projection.

I like the one from ‘77. Seller open to offers too. Guild did fantastic work with the color red.

Got my 79 D25 for 425 bucks at a swapmeet a couple of years ago. Lots of dings and scratches but no cracks or breaks, plenty of saddle left, oh and the original case! Plays and sounds wonderful!
The main selling point of my D-25 was that it had a lotta saddle left (especially for being almost 40 years old.). It wouldn’t win any beauty pageants but it has a nice tone. Did the neck shapes vary over the years? The one on my 86’ is stupid thin.

$425 for a guitar that sounds better than many acoustics that cost 2k and have no mojo. Awesome!

I agree,
I own a 92’ D4 that has incredible tone, bought it off a guitarist in Florida for 399.00 several years ago. I just love that guitar, so much so that I sold my 87’ D25 due to just not being as comfortable and great sounding as my D4, I will say there are some nice D25’s out their for sure. I sold my D25 in April and it funded my DV52AB which is a gift for my son when he gets back from Afghanistan. He says he has a lot he wants to write about these days. It should be a lifetime guitar for him.

Hey, can we see a photo of the DV52AB? I gave one of those to my son when he graduated college.

My hat's off to your son, hope he comes home safe & sound real soon!

You bet,
I have seen the one you gifted your son, with the inlay work, it’s beautiful. Here’s my sons.

Actually it's the Mahogany finish, it got progressively darker through the '70's, and takes on a reddish hue with age. ;)
The longer I am part of LTG, the less of a real expert on Guild acoustics do I feel. Not that I ever claimed to be an expert. 😀
