Do you have any great venues where you've seen/experienced some of your favorites?

mbtz.jpg

My #1 is the historic Mt. Baker Theater (MBT) in Bellingham, WA, and it's only a block away from my home.

In the recent years, I've seen John Prine, Leo Kottke (twice), Ricky Skaggs, Riders in the Sky, The Four Songwriters (Lyle Lovett, Guy Clark, John Hiatt, and Joe Ely), Beausoleil, Pearl Jam, Bruce Cockburn....to name just a few. The MBT has quite the eclectic mix. Garrison Keillor even stopped by once with the Prairie Home Companion.

I just wait for all these stars to come to my neighborhood.

Eons ago, ok late 80's, I was in Germany on a business trip. We had an afternoon/evening off and a few of us went into Munich for the afternoon. While exploring around town we spotted a poster for a Bruce Springsteen concert that evening. We had a quick bite for dinner, found a cab to take us to the venue (a soccer stadium) scalped tickets and found ourselves 20-30 yards away from the stage. Great show, Tunnel of Love Tour. Adding to the surreal quality... I was living in Jersey at the time and I'm watching THE Jersey band while surrounded by Germans singing "Born in the USA".

Ken,

Thanks for the reminder.
I had a girlfriend who lived in New Braunfels in the 70s (might be there, still?) and we went there a couple of times. Saw Jerry Jeff one time and Michael Martin Murphy another.

I was in my sit-and-watch-and-learn period so I soaked it up.

The inside is something, murals of ethereal representations of constellations in the style of Botticelli's Venus about 15+ feet tall and other smaller representations of planets and other astronomical bodies. Unfortunately I could not find any images of the interior auditorium.
The major venue in Lawrence for "name" Americana and folk. This year I've seen Steve Earle, Dar Williams and Joan Baez there. Not bad for college town.

7th St Theater in Hoquiam, Wa.

Seats about a thousand, I didn't know it existed till a few weeks back, noticed an advert in the local paper for Glen Yarborough on a Friday night.

It's a grand old theater, opened in 1929. A volunteer group keeps the place alive.
The plaster "atmospheric" ceiling is currently undergoing restoration.

The Stone Church, Newmarket, NH. I used to LOVE playing this place.
A great place for both local and national acts. Phish, They Might Be Giants, The Del Fuegos, Joan Osborne and many others have played there.
My 80's band, Get Smart at the Church in 1987.

And yes, that's my Green Starfire, and the other guitarist using my S-100.

Love the old-church-as-music-venue concept. They seem to come with a built-in 'vibe' all their own.

The 'other guitarist' looks like he might be in his jammies or some other ultra-comfortable outfit. Works for me!

Cheers,
Joe

I could throw out a Guild sighting here: Joni Mitchell with the great Jaco Pastorius at the UC Berkeley Greek Theater, site of the annual UC Berkeley Jazz Festival. An amphitheater carved into a hillside overlooking San Francisco Bay with a view all the way across to the SF skyline and a grass shelf at the top perfect for picnicing. Absolutely the best acoustics I've ever heard in my life, you are literally swimming in the sound and yet can have a conversation with the person next to you without shouting. Also seen here over the years were Weather Report: Joe Zawinul was making noises like the saucers were landing in the hills behind us that night; and Sonny Rollins who played WITHOUT AMPLIFICATION fronting his fully mic'd quartet.

I'll try to post a photo/link later but let's not forget the historic Lincoln Theater in downtown Mt. Vernon, WA.
A rather poignant memory for me at the Lincoln was when I saw Doc and Merle together for one of their last performances before Merle was killed.
You just had to feel for Doc! And we all did. Still do. :(

Speaking of which, my wife and I saw David Sancious, keyboard player for the first two Springsteen albums in a recordstore in NJ. He was close enough that I could have changed the settings on his keyboard by leaning over.

Looks like a comfortable way to go and I'm all about comfort.
Finish the gig, go home, and go to bed. Now there's a concept I can embrace.

Thanks,
Joe

That brings back a bunch of memories. I was a resident of Newmarket in the mid 70's. UNH grad in 1975. Wonderful place for music.

Chuck's Cellar in Palo Alto will always be my favorite club.

Opened for John Stewart, Glenn Yarbrough and the Limelighters, and Juice Newton there. Eagles got started there (as Ronstadt's band!!)

Amazing folk, jazz, R&B club long gone.
