On the subject of wildlife. I took Mrs. West to Shreveport yesterday to hop a plane for Branson, Mo. Within 3 miles of the house on the Farm to Market road, first there was a doe that had been hit by a car, then just down the road, what looked like an 8 point that had just been hit by a large truck....driver stopped on the side of the road checking him out, then on down the road, with his head in the road, about a 300# black hog.

The deer must be in rut now because they don't get hit that often around here. They just do crazy stuff in rut.......ram through windows, attack cars and trucks, and go places they normally wouldn't.

I love cats.
And they must know it too. Everytime I walk somewhere where there's one, it only takes seconds until the cat is either talking to me or rubbing against my legs at the surprise of most owners.
I had a few, the last one was special. When he heard the sound of the car arriving, he would come out of the house and wait until I gave my shoulder a little pat, and then jump on my shoulder, trusting me to grab him and hold him (which in fact was in my interest of doing or he might have used his claws to stay up there.... ) and then proceeded to suck on my shoulder as if some milk was gonna come out of it...
I guess he got stuck on some baby cat memory and thought I was his mother.

Lots of vehicle/deer confrontations around here September through mid November, Jim. You probably remember that my red Mustang was wiped out by a big buck three years ago Labor Day Weekend... He was chasing a doe who had run across the road in front of me; I slowed down when I saw the doe, but he was focused in on the babe, paid no heed to me, and took out the entire right side. A second earlier and he would have come through the windshield with much worse consequences for old Scratch.

May through July, unfortunately, lots of fawns are hit as they follow mom across these country roads. Neat living amongst 'em, but particularly considering the huge deer overpopulation problem in these parts, it pays to drive defensively and cautiously especially during the spring and fall...

After every road trip, I wish I had made a list/kept track of all the roadkills along the way. Our recent trip was no exception, and if you're on the road after dark this time of year, heads up!!

Another interesting thing with roadkill is how the species will change as you move up and down and across the country. We saw foxes in Montana and had to get to Arkansas to see the first armadillo!

I love these topics :p We here in the Northeast are over run by deer, raccoons, skunks etc, some folk still hunt in south jersey but a lot of people ( meaning kids ) are quite confused as to where there food comes from. They are taught it's not o.k to kill animals but love their McDonald's. Anyway, there is nothing compassionate about deer who can't find food and are starving or diseased.
Just my 2 cents worth and that's about what it's worth :p

Dead coot in the middle of the road

I removed it to the side of the road because I don't care to see the flattened version. :(

This was taken on my way to the outhouse in the morning.

There were 16 deer in all but all were yearlings or does. From inside the outhouse, I could hear them munching away outside. Interesting, to say the least.

Well Bing, one thing about wolves is that they eat coyotes, who pretty much move out when they move in. Coyotes are mostly open country animals when wolves are present these days. Then you would need grizzlies to eat the wolves and since you are in MT you would have to back track about 60M years ago to find a T. rex to eat the bears
A few years ago I was at a bar mitzvah in suburban Chicago in the fall, and the hotel abutted one of the many glorious Cook Co. parks. I took a walk and coming up the trail, which had the usual nature markers (this is a tree, this is a rock, etc.), and saw a beautifully posed buck white tail model up ahead. I thought thats a neat idea for a nature trail. Came within 20' or so and the "model" turned its head to look at me, oops. I suspect it wasn't used to seeing someone in dress clothes (jacket, tie) in the woods and loped off. Later saw 3 or 4 more yearlings/does. Apparently they have become a minor plague, should open a shotgun season them to thin the herd the way Mpls. does (did?) along the Mississippi. I guess owning a shotgun in Chicago is a bit problematic despite the judicial ruling, maybe bow and arrow
