Update: Thanks to all who helped get through the "trauma" of this msihap. In the end, I sent the guitar back to the seller and he fully refunded my money. I'm not sure the final outcome he had with UPS.

In the meantime, I did submit the winning bid on a Taylor 855 which I received last week and I'm very happy with, but I continue to be one the lookout for a nice and affordable 60s to early 70s Guild 12. In other words, not necessarily pristine but playable or easily made playable.

Greetings:

New to the forum with my "new" 73 F212XL (btw, please excuse the typo in my username)

It needs some TLC, including a new bridge and a neck reset.

Also, it was damaged in shipping so that it now sports a rather major crack along the bottom of the pickguard to the bottom binding. Repairable, probably, but still a crack nonetheless and certainly not a good thing for stability .

With regards the bridge, if anyone can give me some direction where I might find a replacement, much appreciated.

Also, in resetting the neck, are there any particular tricks involved in resetting a double truss rodded Guild neck?

Any oher advice on restoring this beautiful piece of workmanship?

Thanks

Why do people think we have problems with grammar?

Hey Chuck, welcome to LTG.

Many good folk here with repair experience and many more with advice. Someone should be here to assist you shortly.

Hi Chuck and welcome; sorry about your shipping damage ... sadly becoming more and more common. If you're not an accomplished luthier, my suggestion would be to get a pro to look at it. The bridge has a piece of wood under it called the bridge plate; if you're going to replace the bridge, then typically the bridgeplate comes off / goes on at the same time. Trouble is, unless it's fractured already, it's glued fast to the bottom of the deck and steam or other luthier tricks are needed to get it off. You might could stumble along with the body fixes but if you mess up the bridge or spend hours on the neck and still get it wrong, you're not going to have much to show for your effort. cj

Geez, this is becoming an epidemic!

See my posts on "F-412, the Verdict" and "Crying." Mine too cracked in two placed on the top of the lower bout, damage due to the shipper's not removing the endpin before shipping.

I am returning the guitar to the seller and his luthier will repair it.

GOOD LUCK!

Re: F212XL Needs Bridge, Neck reset and crack repair

Thanks for the welcome and feedback. Luckily, I have a good friend who repairs guitars when he not playing them or teaching others and he's very capable in getting this thing back to great playable condition. Unfortunately, any value the guitar retained before the crack has been substantially diminished.

I bought this one knowing that it needed a neck reset, a new bridge and some small cracks stabilized. But the big crack was definitely not part of the deal.

So far, my seller has insisted that we go through UPS damage claim process and so far he's not acknowledging responsibility.

Has anyone else had any experience with UPS claims on damaged guitars? What can I expect?

Am I wrong to think that the seller should step up here? Should I insist he take it back and refund my money? Or do I ask him for some consideration on the purchase price due to decreased value?

BTW, regarding forum etiquette, please excuse me if I'm taking the discussion off-topic. If it needs to be moved elsewhere, please et me know.

No; doing fine here Chuck. The threads go where they do and I'm not sure grinding through 20 posts on sad cracks will do much. Who 'owns' the claim is a function of the original paperwork. Unless you made your own arrangements, the shipping 'deal' was between seller and UPS to deliver in good condition. Although you paid for it, UPS owed that service to the seller, not you. If this were a perfert world, yeah - sure, the seller should step up but .... Don't throw the packaging away!!! Good luck w/ your claim. cj

You are not wrong to assume the seller should step up. If you buy a computer from Best Buy and it arrives damaged, they take it back. The shipper assumes responsibility when something arrives damaged. I bought a glass top for my car that was shipped from Florida andarrived damaged early this year. I contacted the seller, who shipped through a UPS store. The claim was filed through the store. I was sent a UPS label, and a couple of days later a UPS guy came to my office, looked at the top, packed it up and took it away. I recieved a full refund about two weeks later (I'm not sure if the seller had been paid by UPS or not at that point, but he did recieve confirmation that UPS would honor the claim)>

I always ship through a UPS store or shipping outlet that will initiate and follow through on a claim if necessary. Also, if the UPS store packs your item, they accept responsibility for damage.

Re: F212XL Needs Bridge, Neck reset and crack repair

I responded earlier today regarding a LTG thread for Guitar Shipping.

My recent experiences with UPS are not good. They cracked two headstocks, two weeks apart! Both were Guilds in hard cases.

Seems UPS will try to deny most claims claiming it was not packed properly, shipper used a "used" condition box, etc..

I took many digital pictures of shipping box, case, padding, and guitar damages which helped both sellers. I used blue painter tape "pointers" to highlight the damaged areas in my pictures. I also copied the original ebay pictures showing guitars in pre-shipping undamaged condition.

The second damaged Guild claim was denied twice by UPS. I wrote a detailed e-mail to the UPS claims manager with my pictures, ebay pictures, insurance charges, and pictures of the NEW box that was used. I pointed out that the NEW box had cuts, fold, creases, small smashed in corner, obviously caused by rough handling. I told him that the original factory hard case absorbed MOST of the rough handling. However, the neck/headstock is the weakest structural part of the guitar and it broke since it could not handle ALL of the mishandling stresses. I also referred to my prior Quality Assurance inspection experience at a nuclear power plant, including national inspection certifications. The claim was then paid to the seller.

I use USPS now.

Good Luck!
Happy New Years!
