When I origionally spotted this S100 on eBay with the high asking price I just glanced over it and assumed it was a refinish at an unrealistic price. Looking at it a little coser today it appears the finish is stock (i.e., see color fading in picture with the pickguard removed and overspray in electronics route). I have seen 60's Polaras in 3 stock colors: transparant cherry, sunburst and darkedged edge sunburst. The guitar here is a light brown"tobacco burst". There have also been references to a green finish.

Has anyone seen a finish like this in the past?

Hans, is this a stock color? (I like it but not for the asking price.)

More of a honeyburst than the usual sunburst. I gotta believe it's a refinish. I like it do, and dislike it for the same reason you do.

Doesn't matter if it's a refin - this one is the only one for sale "anywhere on this Earth". :)

Hello Mike,

It's really hard to judge the quality of the finish by looking at a photo but I must say it looks like a pretty good job. However, it is definitely a refinish and most likely done by someone who knew what he was doing!

Sincerely,

Mike, from the pics, it looks like that finish has always been there.
the chipping around the headstock/ overlay.
White wheel wax in the cavities looks untouched.
Very clean, but natural settling on body finish.
Pot codes read a 65, very clean, stock cpa.
a real clost queen :)

Hello J,

It sounds like you've been looking at older guitars a bit more than the average reader on these pages, but the reasons why you've come to the above conclusion is exactly the reason why I wrote:
"However, it is definitely a refinish and most likely done by someone who knew what he was doing!"

Sincerely,

Hans Moust

OK, let's make this into a contest! The first 3 people who can give me a good reason why they're convinced this is a refinished guitar, win a set of my 'Sweet 16' postcards.

You can't repeat the same answer that somebody posted before you and no answers like 'wrong color' or 'gut feeling'.

Good luck!

P.S. 'Because Hans says so' will not be considered a good answer!

I would say that if it was the 60's finish, the fading that can be seen when removing the pick guard would be much more accentuated than it is here... :?:

I'm going to guess that the factory normally didn't spray the rear cavity and would have taped it off, whereas this guitar has finish there. I'm probably wrong, but, if I'm right, I don't want to win anything, Hans. I just want to have the right to say "Hans said so." :D :D

I see Dogman beat me to the paint fade thing by 3 minutes.....
The odd thing is when I posted, I didn't see the notice saying another post had been up between Hans' and mine..... So I thought I was legit until I came back to the thread and saw Dogman's post......

Well if you two are right, you can split the set and get 8 cards each!

If we win we can share them with the first 14 that request 1. Of coarse bluesypicky and I will get to pick the ones we want first.

there are no nitro crackles as one usually would expect of a guitar this age.
