I don't follow Gibson and I had no idea that they made the "Firebird Zero". They should have scrubbed the mission on this one and tried again.

I remember when they blew them out on Musicians Friend for $350 IIRC. These are pretty abysmal guitars, only for those who care so much about having Gibson on the headstock that they’d shell out $500 for these pieces of steaming hot garbage.

The Melody Maker stuff from the early 2010’s was the same way. Slapped together with bare minimum effort to reach a low price point. I remember trying a Melody Maker V at Guitar Center and it was finished so thin that the neck already had a spot of paint on the back of the neck that was worn away!

Henry J. Had his finger on the pulse of the guitar world; he knew just what we (didn’t) want!

They don't have a good record with Firebirds:

I had no idea they sold that poorly. I knew they weren’t really flying off the shelves either as I recall the GC I frequented in Dallas had the same red one that sat for almost 3 years. I think Gibsons claim of the guitars being defective is damage control as I remember this garnered tons of negative publicity along with that video of some dude running some ES husks through a chop saw.

They are ugly and cheaply made but just remember not everyone can afford a 5k guitar.

6 strings, two humbuckers, slightly Guildy looking body (?), what's there not to like?

Henry J. took Gibson in a great direction in the early 90's. He's responsible for the 1st run of Les Paul Classics in 1990, those guitars only lasted two years or just slightly into 1993.

These were the best Les Paul Gibson had built since 1959, strictly a product of Henry J.'s vision.

I've been lucky enough to have several. Each one better than the $10k guitars rushed out of the "Historic Division" now.

A "Page model from Japan, Gold Grovers and uncovered bridge p'up.

'91 JP LP 1.jpg

A bone stock rare Tobacco Sunburst plain top from 1990, 1st year.

OMFG Why did I ever get rid of this one?

One I sold to a guy a Canadian in the band Quota that was touring with Bon Jovi at the time. I bought it from Buffalo Bros in Carlsbad CA, and after I sold it on eBay it turned out it had been stolen from a church in Riverside CA, just a couple miles down from the guitar store. And the church said sorry, no insurance coverage, your stuff. A detective from down there wanted me to get the guitar back, and the guy who had it said he'd never let it go, and he's on the other side of the border, but tours the US. Messy...

My original. A legendary guitar on the internet years after I sold it, weird... It was a DEMO model from Gibson, serialized and stamped DEMO in the edge of the control cavity. I gave up a lot to get this guitar. A '62 P Bass, plus a '79 Strat, plus an '66 SG Jr, and cash, I forget...

Absolutely legendary guitars, this one with my home made double whites made with original Gibson PAF slugs and screws, sitting next to a 1990 or so Blackie Les Paul Custom, my second favorite Les Paul.

Another case in point for Henry J. The carve of these stunning early 90's Les Pauls was the best since the 50's just incredibly masterfully carved tops. Last I saw a Custom and had it handed to me from the wall at GC, a Custom now has so little carve in the top it's a joke, and it's all machine done, and they're all missing the secret sauce of the early 1990's at Gibson, dubbed the "goodwood years".

A whole Lotta Love from me. Frankly, I was never inspired to go out and get a Guild or any other guitar when I had these.

Wow, that's quite a history with Les Pauls you have here. I'm impressed! Fantastic Grain in the "Quota" one.

Yeah the look is not a turn off for me. It’s the quality or lack there of that seems to be in good supply from Gibson. I have played a few LPJ’s of recent years that looked like early MIC. Hardly any f$&@s given when built. If I were buying new and wanted an LP, LP double cut or a JR I would probably hit up Kurt at Rondo music and grab an extremely well made Agile.
