I'm considering TV Jones Classics for my X170T.

I love the look of the Gretsch rings, but I'm wondering if they'll fit with the existing pick guard.

Anyone have any experience with this?

Thanks,

If those TV Jones pups are the same size as the Gretch Dynasonics pickups it is tricky getting them installed in a way that can be returned to stock and avoid the strings from hitting the pickups. I have a set if Filtertrons and if I remember correctly the pickup body is not as tall as a Dynasonic but the pole pieces make the overall height of hte pickup higher than a Dynasonic. The pole pice screws on a Filtertron have a pan head so they always stick up above the top of the pickup which results in the strings hitting the pickup. So depending on the particulars you may have some problems.

I modified a blond X170T with the addition of the Dynasonics and I was never crazy about the setup. I eventually returned it to stock and sold the guitar. Their are pictures posted here somewhere on that guitar. Now to find them?!?

GAD, the way you would do that is through TV's English Mount, That allows you to use the Gretsch sized pickups in a HB sized mount. The other option is to go with TV Trons that do not have the look of the Gretsch Filtertrons or the Gretsch rings.

The mounting of filtertrons or the TV Jones pickups is night and day different from the mounting of a dynasonic. The dynasonic would be much harder to do in a reversable form, I would think. Matsickma, I would like to see a close up of how you did that, if you wouldn't mind. How did they sound?

Thanks. Yes I'm looking at the TV Jones with English mount. There are two options though - Gibson style and Gretsch style rings. I really like the look of the Gretsch rings and am wondering if they'll fit in the pick guard's existing cutout.

My understanding is that the cutouts would be the same. Hopefully the screwholes will line up as well. Check with Tom Jones to be sure.

TV Jones Classics are the bomb I love mine. Tv also makes the Classic in a Dynasonic case it's called DeArmond on the web site. I also love the Guild humbuckers in my X500 and Starfire III. Having done it before I wouldn't change out the X170T pups personally. But if you haven't done it before I would probably change them out just to see. The English mount is the way to go with the Gretsch looking rings. If you don't like the way they sound in your X170T you won't lose much re-selling the TV's and will have had a lot of fun. :D
