A Guild 12 string is a rare animal where I live. I was wondering how much difference there is in the tone of my 1990 JF30-12 and a recent F512 Maple. I see the F512 maple has a mahogany neck, ebony fretboard, a higher grade top, and perhaps different top bracing. I know a number of you are full of knowledge about these different guitars. Just asking out of curiosity.

Guitars are individuals so there's no way to know without a direct comparison. However, I had a 2003 F412 that I replaced with an Oxnard F412 (512 Maple). They are both fine guitars, well made and sound great. The biggest reason I went for the Oxnard version was that it was lighter weight and had a slimmer neck (single truss rod with carbon reinforcing bars). The workmanship was a little cleaner with narrower bracing on the inside, but that wasn't a factor for me making the switch. The Oxnard version sounded a little more open and responsive. While it wasn't a huge difference in sound, it was very noticeable and positive. For me it was worth the swap (slimmer neck!), but I could have easily lived with the Corona model for rest of my playing days. The Oxnard version was just the right guitar, in the right place, at the right time for me. Good luck with your quest!!

I'm also curious about the difference between a Westerly 93 JF 30 and a recent Jumbo Maple
