Warning - Western Swing alert!

If you're in or around Nashville you probably already know these folks but they're so great I had to share it with anybody who doesn't. Mostly studio musicians... all top of the heap. Dawn Sears is one of the greatest country singers alive, and Andy Reiss is just tasteful to the max. This isn't the junk on commercial radio, it's what some of country music's finest players do for fun every Monday night in Nashville.

The personnel floats a little depending on who's in town. Here's one Andy wrote. Notice the unusual trade offs on the call/response section... whew!

We're fans here - first heard them on Prairie Home, I think. On rhythm guitar, that's Ranger Doug, the "Idol of American Youth".

Ranger Doug was with Riders of the Sky - they did a few years here in Vancouver at the Folk Festival, to the surprise, amazement and delight of the left coast hippies gathered about.

That's the cowboy way, JK.

I recall seeing Riders at Harvard University on a bill with Fiddle Fever and Hot Rize/Red Knuckles in the early 80s, I guess. Good show!

Wow... that is sweet! Thanks for posting that. I hadn't heard him, but I have to hear more now. I love the thumbpick only style... very cool and he still gets the really fast runs in there (with his fingers maybe?). Interesting guitar too, it looks like it might be a modified ES150.

Ranger Doug recently did an instructional book on rhythm guitar... sort of Freddie Green meets Eldon Shamblin 2 and 4 to the bar chords. Very Nice.

That was sweet Joe. You tube is really cool, like a map kind of..if I hadn't taken the lead from your post, that link might not have been found, or posted. It great to find a 4 star nugget when you are panning for gold   Nice when a couple of old prospectors can share their 'claims' :D What say we do a little pickin' some day, we aren't all that far apart. :D Steffan (LTG Hoot for the Northwesterners?)

That sounds like a fine idea. I get up to B'ham now and then for a day (or part thereof) to see another old picker buddy Ralph Estes. That's not too far from you, right?
