I do agree that wanton destruction is not pleasant but I'm not necessarily willing to consign such showmen to a special place in h*ll

And I wasn't going that far either. An idiot, yes, hell, no.

Bluesy, you make some good points. Maybe he is just an idiot. ;)

I must admit Chaz, I have a negative bias towards P.T.... And way beyond his guitar play. Based on many an account of people who dealt with and around him, I never could relate with this guy.
Apologies to PT fans who got hurt in this painful process...... 8)

Scott, where are you coming up with all these great Townshend pictures?
On thewho.net that Coastie posted.

Least we forget,... Rock n' Roll in not necessarily about musically ability.

Pete Townshend as a guitarist? No.
The Who as a rock band? Yes.
Pete Townshend as a showman? Hell yes!

The energy conjured up at a Who concert is over whelming.
11 dead Who fans in Chicago will attest to that.

Again, not considered a valuable instrument back then.

Don't forget, a Stratocaster compared to a Stradivarius is like a rock compared to a Faberge egg.

I don't think Pete was an idiot doing that

I do.
Seeing the Coastie link is just sickening....
I'm with Pascal on this one. It's that gray area when 'showmanship' becomes just plain silly. His talent is unquestionable but what's the purpose of the random 'slaughter' of all those guitars? Art? Please!!

Seeing him do it here and there is one thing. To sit and read what might be only a partial list makes me queasy.
But, mine not to question why..... :?

Will they indeed?
I agree with the idiocy/anger issue stance, but he certainly is a fine songwriter & rhythm guitarist.

Personality flaws aside, I have a bootleg of them from '69 during the "Tommy" tour and there are some pretty amazing nods to Beck, Hendrix, and Clapton on it. And Live at Leeds is one of the greatest live rock albums of all time as well. He was not just a great rhythm player by any means.
