I have to say... I think it's hideous (sorry for the sacrilege, but there you have it), but it is definitely a cool thing to have! Did Townsend keep this guitar, or was he just photographed playing it?

I think Hans has a picture or two of the Merle Travis in the Old Testament!

When I first saw one of these, I think I felt the same way. But these are just so over the top that they are pretty cool, really.

Without a doubt. it's a hideous guitar. I think the cool part is seeing young
Pete sitting on a step ladder playing it in someones backyard
just before he wraps it around a tree. :)

Let me rephrase that so it's a bit clearer:
Of all the Guild advertisements I've seen, I like this one best because it has such a great picture of Merle Travis. Love the ad, hate the guitar. The guitar is as tasteless as it gets, but an important historical artifact from the days of Country Music sequins.

Let's face it. There are certain brands and models which, if destroyed heinously, would be doing the world a big favor. That said, I would cringe to watch it anyway.

I don't think Pete was an idiot doing that; I guess it was a sign of the times. Another sign of rebellion, perhaps? I remember Belushi in Animal House when he takes that guy's guitar and destroys it against the frat house wall. I'll admit it... I laughed. That wasn't rebellion; it was just good taste. :D

At least Pete was selective for the most part. Gotta figure back in the day,
something like an SG was not a valuable guitar.
Personally, I have never even liked an SG.

I have a story from him in a guitar book around here some where in which he talks about be in the heat of the moment.
Somebody off stage handed him a Customized Les Paul that was solid maple with all wood trim instead of ANY plastic.
He took the axe in one fatal swoop and as he was releasing it, he realized what it was but could
not stop it's momentum because of it's weight. He wasn't to happy about it.

So, I don't think of him as an idiot.

You gotta laugh at that picture of that F-50 that typically brings what, around $1,000-$2,000?
But his is valued at $8,000-$12,000 because Pete Townshend smashed it.

I do. Along with all the others that for some reason found the "fashionable" aspect of destroying great instruments in front of fans that could only dream of owning one (but who, for another reason -acid?- found it delectable to watch) was an easy way to expand their fame and fortune then....

I'm not saying that we were'nt all idiots at some point of our youth, but I suspect these "rituals" were not all the spontaneous expression of a rebellious youth but the result of a carefully thought out marketing engineering... Who knows? It might even have been encouraged by the labels then! More LP sales after the show!

But as you pointed out, these were different times and granted, there was the "rebellion" factor in the air then, but I, for one, have always been turned off by this "ritual", aside from the fact that I never was P.T. fan on a "guitaristic" standpoint.

Seeing the Coastie link is just sickening....

And another vote for "ugly" here!
Looks like you got us out of the closet Chaz!!!

Bluesy, you make some good points. Maybe he is just an idiot. ;)

Scott, where are you coming up with all these great Townshend pictures? Oh, and OUCH on that F-50. Now it's official; I hate Townshend.

great instruments
I'm no expert, but I would say that a number of the "great instruments" that were destroyed as part of a show were not considered great at the time. The fact that many of them were still in production at the time of destruction is also a mitigating factor, IMO.

I do agree that wanton destruction is not pleasant but I'm not necessarily willing to consign such showmen to a special place in h*ll or even brand them idiots. YMMV, obviously.

While Wikipedia is not always the most reliable source for facts it does point out that Pete was not alone in including equipment destruction in the act. I suppose the fact that Jimi Hendrix burned Fenders and not Guilds is the reason he has been left out of the discussion so far.
