Ol' Hankeroo is at it again (still). This SF IV is on eBay right now; based on all of the parts being sold in separate auctions it looks like it must have been a good player that was all there. He states "IT HAD THE WRONG PICKUPS INSTALLED SO I TOOK IT APART" - however, he is selling the correct (original) pickups in other auctions. I had to stop myself from asking him accusatory questions. And yes, the label does say "Starfire IV" while the auction is listed as an SF III. Do a little research, seller!

Sorry, rant over...

I agree. I recently sold a Strat -- a cool, transparent red Strat American Deluxe that I loved but I couldn't justify owning (that means I needed the money). It was purchased by a guy who had more than 150,000 ebay transactions. I saw it chopped up into bits. I can't describe the feeling of seeing something that I babied and protected sold for parts. Yeah, I needed the money but I wasn't desperate and in retrospect I wish I had just found some high school or college kid who had more talent and interest than money for guitars and simply gifted the Strat to him/her. Next time.

A about month ago he had a 64 Starfire IV parted out. I bought the pickups which in fact were original. Turns out the previous owner had posted a few times about that guitar on this forum so I actually learned that the guitar was complete when taken apart. I wonder what his reason for taking that one apart was other than profit? I felt lucky to find 1964 pickups to put in my 1964 CE-100 but you're right. A complete vintage original guitar should always be left in tact.
Edit; Sad to say, there's more than one ebay seller doing that. I bought those pickups not from Hankaroo but from Gibsondependable. Yes there should be a law.

other than profit?

What other reason do you need?

We brought this up here before - we get mad that the guitars are parted out, but a few times, those same guitars were offered here on this forum, at pretty good prices, and no one wanted them. Again, it doesn't justify the parting out, but we've had chances to rescue these guitars...

I think you might be talking about the '65 SF III that I had?

I always buy guitars and part them out. Profit baby!! Heck guitars are only chunks of wood, I say burn'm all!! LOL

In addition, distasteful as it may be to some, there are people who have purchased parts from a "chopped" guitar in order to restore an instrument of theirs.

It happens in other areas as well - cars, computers, amps, etc.

Among other things, I used to work on HP DL and ML series servers. A used two-year-old server still with a year of warranty left, could be sold as parts for a lot more than the server as a whole. It happens all the time. No one cries.

Amps: There is a bagged lousy, terrible sounding Canadian-made 80s solid state amp for sale here with an asking price of $80. A low ball offer of $40 would probably get the amp eventually. If it is still original, it will have 4 x 10" vintage Celestions in it, which could be flipped for considerably more than the $40. No one would cry if the rest of the amp went for scrap.

A well made guitar being parted out is worthy of tears. But as other have said above, it i$ ea$y to $€€ why it happen$.

Yes, I always forget this aspect. Reminds me of the organ donor program that I signed up for on my driver's license.

I don't there're any "Geek Porn" publications out there celebrating the fine points af various vintages of HP servers, like we see for guitars, but if I'm wrong, we want pics!
