This forum's search function is insufferable.

Eye have never actually had a problem with it. Aye am not sure what we are missing out on. What improvements might "fixing it" deliver?

It's not so bad for words that don't appear very often. For example: searching for 'Emmy Lou Harris' (as some members do) returns 11 hits ... this is the search string. The function is also pretty fast for words that appear more frequently like 'bridge'; searching returns 7,681 hits ... this is the search string. It generated the list in about 3 seconds.

What it doesn't do well is compile; it creates the list but if you want to advance to page two, you get a reply to the effect that you can't use the function right now ... something like that. You have to wait; it can assemble a list faster than it can retrieve all the posts. The wait is a function of the number of hits. If you give it a minute or so, you can go to page 2 or jump all the way to the the oldest hit - the hits are returned in reverse chronological order with the most recent first. Once the software has compiled the hits, there's another search level "Search these results" which allows a second order search within the hits.

It's pretty annoying to get the 'can't use it now' message but if you wait, it'll show you the search results. The other deal is the load; there are nearly 262,500 posts ... of which many are boffoblather, silly epigrams, :? :( :| :x , or members telling other members to get bent. Whenever Search goes looking, it has to plow the entire database every time; it's not like eBay, it can't save searches but users can save the results as a search string ... if they need some string/s. Tso; from the search function's and prospective users viewpoints, every wittyditty here is (...........)

Now I understand. I don't know much about how these forums work, but I guess the search function is part of the platform the forum runs on.
I'm a member of the Fractal Audio Forum. It used to look visually like LTG but was changed recently to another platform. I don't know the reason, but the quality of the search function may possibly have been part of it. The new platform is aesthetically unattractive to say the least and I find it off-putting. I would hate to see that happen here unless absolutely called for.

What fix are you asking for? Search runs just fine although it could probably be tuned to be a little more useful for cases where a search is done on a model number, for example D-25 or D25 or even "D 25". If you are talking about the wait between pages, I believe that is a deliberate choice by Don to manage the bandwidth that he has to pay for. The only fix for that is to donate enough to Don that he elects to pay for additional bandwidth.

Ya all,

What woud it cost to eliminate the waiting period? (I don't think that's a time to wait.)

What really bugs me is what happens after I've entered two terms and started clicking on posts. When I back out of a post, I often have to enter the second term again--after waiting, of course. The same can happen when I click on page two of a bunch of posts: a pop up says I can't search again--when I ain't even searching.

Fearless,
I'm a member of the Fractal Audio Forum.
A lot of people I know must be members of that forum. They're always telling me to get fract.

Darryl, you may be experiencing something related to the flood control settings. I'll look & see if that's the case & if there's an easy work around.

I never knew that Phoenix had flood control settings. I mean less than 9" a year is what my wife gets.

Yep.....changed the user search flood control to 5 seconds. It was at 20. "Guests" which also means you when you aren't logged in is set at 60 seconds.

Minimum characters for search is set at 2, & just changed the max character limit to 20.

I never use any forum's search function . . . google search works fine for me. After entering your search keywords, just type:

site:letstalkguild.com

to only get results from this forum.

That'll work better now. Until last night, all bot access has been limited to the forum. Just allowed access to google again so there may be a more comprehensive return on your search.

Don:

Thank you for your prompt attention to this, and for finding a low-cost solution.

I certainly appreciate all of the time & effort that you put into making LTG what it is.

So that's why I noticed 'visits' from the google bot last night.

Does that creature have access to the members only section or just the 'public' areas?

You guys had better mind your manners now.

What I would love is a way to have search (both the forum's own, and Google's) not search the signatures. Say I wanted to find information on Guild DV52 - I don't need to see all the posts made by folks (like myself) who have DV52 listed in their sigs. :)
