Thinking of selling my X170. Talk me out of it.

Since I got the Starfire, the X170 is getting zero play time. I really dig the X170, but I *love* the Starfire.

I'm on a kick to get rid of all my OK or Good guitars and get/keep the truly outstanding guitars. The X170 is pretty outstanding, but the Starfire is just pure yum. Sure it's only been a couple of weeks. Short attention span. :)

I'm getting rid of things I can easily replace like my 08 Strat and 08 Tele. The X170 isn't like that though, and I'm afraid I'll regret it later, especially since they're no longer made. I have too many damn guitars. My quest was one of each type. Did pretty well: Strat, Tele, Les Paul, Shredder (Jackson), Acoustic, Semi-hollow and hollow.

Still, do I really NEED an X-170 with a Starfire in the house? If the X170 had a bigsby on it, that would be different. I'm not crazy about drilling holes in such a beautiful guitar either. If I could find a Bigsby/Guild tailpiece that had matching holes I'd be pretty excited. Got excited by this one, but the holes are different: http://cgi.ebay.com/Vintage-Guild-Gold- ... 240%3A1318

If I sell it I could apply the money to an X170T (if I could find one) or a Brian Setzer Gretch. I love Swing, Big Band and the Brian Setzer Orchestra. I don't play out anymore, though I'm getting the itch again. Hell even if I joined a big band, I doubt they'd kick me out with a Starfire. :)

So here's your chance to talk me out of it. Of course if you're looking for one, don't talk me out of it and wait to see it in the FS section. :)

Gad, Don't do it. Keep them all. When I grow up I am going to get a Setzer Hot Rod too. Save up and start a collection!

My wife says I should go back into the darkened room now :(

I disagree. I think you should sell it to me at an unheard of low price - record setting low price - the kind of low price legends are made of.

On a more serious note, someone would have to kill me to get my 1969 Starfire IV away from me and deal with annoying haunting for a life time. There is no denying the greatness of the ST IV. I've been playing mine for 27 years and still love it. Perhaps I haven't been as nice to it as I should have but I've working on righting that wrong lately.

I have been kind of obsessed with getting another Guild as of late and the X-170 is on the very short list of models that I am targeting. This might come out wrong but the X-170 seems to be a good compromise between an electric jazz machine which I am drifting towards and some of the noisier music I still play. If only the X-170 had been made in black with chrome hardware and I were 30 lbs lighter and my hair wasn't so gray......

I am looking over in the corner at my electrics on the stands. The ST IV looms large and will always be there. The Ibanez Artcore AK95 has been a surprise hit with me. The Gretsch Electromatic 5120 is just beautiful and a joy to play and sounds wonderful cranked up loud and quiet too. But something is going to have to go to make way for another Guild.

Think about the long term. If you don't think you'd ever do it justice again, then it's time to part. If you think you'll go back to the old dog after the honeymoon, you ought not. I've always been in the practice of keeping the old one until the new one has totally pushed it off stage.

I had a Bigsby put on mine:

I had the installation done by a friend, Unclrob, http://www.rpjguitarworks.com/.

He was able to install it using the existing screw holes and shim it to straighten it. Give him a call or email and see what he can do for you.

Good luck and you are right, you will definitely regret it if you get rid of it.

And years from now you'll be bidding on one on Ebay. Remember the S300! ;)

Thanks for your post. Do you know what model tailpiece that is, and could you possibly take a close-up pic of the end for me?

Thanks,

I just looked at it and I forgot that he had replaced the tab with one off of a B7 (short) so he did have to redrill the bottom hole. He did use the top hole and if the tab had not been cracked he could have used all of the holes. Do you still want the picture?

The model is the standard Guild version of the B6.

I'd love a pic if you're willing - thanks!

Look. Guitar's are made to be played. I believe if you like the way it plays, then do what ever you want to make it sound like what you want, ie add a bigsby, change pickups whatever. It's a late model X170, no matter what you do to it it is not really going to affect the value that much anyway. So don't sell. slap a Bigsby on there and fall in love again!

I got mine off of Ebay. Check with Hans Moust. If anyone has a handle on where you can get one, he does. If you find one with a broken tab, that's OK. Elderly lists replacements.

I agree.

On the other hand, I am sure a friend said that to the owner of a 1959 Les Paul too, back in 1962... ;)

Yeah but Gruhn has said that todays guitars will never have the value of the true "Golden Age" Vintage guitars
