Yes, texted CosmicArkie (Jim) earlier today but have not heard back. He lives about 40 miles east of Dallas.

I texted with Harry (gilded) last night, and all is well with him. He has had power though all this. Toni (LadyTexan) I don't think has been so lucky, but she was OK when we last talked a couple of days ago. I just tried to get through, but I know that her internet was out when we last talked, and she really needs wifi for her cell to work well. Hoping it warms up there soon.

I talked with her last night, and she isn't doing all that great. She was out of power for a long time and ended up bundled in a number of textile products to keep warm. They're warning them down there that the power may go out again, so leave a pot of water on the stove. Oh yeah she has to boil water now because the water is an issue. Not fun for the people in Texas!

And we thought the 2020 bu11$hit was over... :(

walrus

Well, it is over.

It has been replaced with B.S version 2021

Best thoughts and prayers to our TX friends! We're used to the cold weather up here and the homes, the infrastructure, etc. are made to accomodate it. I really hope folks in the South can find safe ways to get/keep warm. Freezing temps, frozen pipes, and no electricity is an absolute disaster, every bit as much as a hurricane or a flood.

In this case, even if you have a woodburning stove, you probably have no running water, no lights, no usable bathroom...

I'm betting our fellow Americans will mobilize and help out in this situation. I can't do the physical work any more, but Mrs. Dread and I will be making a contribution to "World Renew," a on-profit organization that sends teams of volunteers to help out in these situations. Our close friends and Eldermusic board members volunteer for them, and they have been working in communities in the U.S. mainly at the sites of floods, but they will probably be sending a team to TX. They kinda come in after all the news cameras have left town, and help people pick up the pieces. I can only imagine all the frozen, broken plumbing that is going to need replacement before the water can be restored, etc.

It's a lesson for everyone...at a minimum the first 72 is on you. Everyone should have some sort of emergency kit to take care yourself. Food water lights batteries blah blah...

I agree, but I think this is one of those things that people only learn the hard way.

Excellent read. I've read it before, but thanks for the link as it deserved another review. Couple holes in my plan I need to plug.

Plastic gas cans are the spawn of hell! Or at least the spout gizmos that are an abomination.

Just read the Hurricane Sandy Lessons in their entirety - didn't realize how
unprepared we are for anything like that!
Gary, thanks for writing and posting these - great info!

How long have the longest power outages been going on now, 4 - 5 days?

Found this map of current outages, things do not look good in TX.
Click on a state and more info comes up, county by county and the power provider.

Thoughts and prayers to our friends in Texas.

Yes, unfortunately many people do not prepare for natural disasters or unexpected emergencies even with all the constant media coverage about them. Many believe that it will never happen to them.

I’ve been without power for a week or more during the winter at least 3 times. Luckily I’m a pepper with redundant everything and food stores to last months so it was never more than a minor inconvenience.

I can’t tell you how many times I was made sport of by friends and family because of my warnings to them until the SHTF. But boy where they sure glad when I sent them Covid care packages of N95s, gloves and sanitizer when the shelves were bare.

Y2K, Swine Flu, Sandy, Covid and other major disruptions as bad as they are become wake up calls for many to at least be ready for some level of down time and isolation. Still most others do not heed the warnings until it is too late. Human nature I guess.

Blackouts......another reason why I don't think "we're there yet" in terms of switching to electric vehicles.

Best wishes to Texas and her citizens.

Still alive, power at work was knocked out from Monday until the middle of yesterday. Roads on some highways are somewhat clear. Will probably be like a skating rink again tomorrow but I think as far as my neck of the woods go if we make it through tomorrow afternoon I think most of this stuff will melt.

I have been in contact intermittently with a friend in northern Texas. It is cold. There is snow. But his power has not been affected so far.

I haven't heard from him in a day or so though. He said his Internet service was up and down like crazy.

It's the things that don't happen very often that people don't prepare or build for. " Why? That only happens once in a lifetime " is the reasoning.

The loss of power there is quite devastating for the hardships it has caused to the populace. Best to all there, hope you get through it all ok. Hard to fathom how this can happen in a first world country/state.

I found this little tidbit from Texarkana perversely humorous - one side of the street is Arkansas & the other side Texas. The Arkansas side has snow ploughs, the Texas side doesn't so...

We are in San Marcos. Living on a large stash of freeze dried backpacking foods and stored water. Power is back. Driving is treacherous - few people know how to drive in these conditions. I forgot how much I like the trail food.

Haven't heard from TX in quite a while. I know he got busy with other concerns. Hoping he's well!
