I have been doing a lot of cycling. I went for a 25km ride last night. It was great exercise and I had the streets to myself. I have proper lights on my bike for safety so I won't get turned into street pizza by a car or truck. Made it home safely looking forward to a shower and a good nights sleep. Rolled up my driveway and saw some movement near the front door. I thought it was a rabbit because there are a million of them in my area. I was 3ft away and quickly realized rabbits don't have white stripes up their back! I guess Pepe Le Pew felt corned in my porch area so he immediately went into his little handstand while I was trying to back away. He got the front of my bike, my cycling shoes and lower legs. I guess I can consider myself lucky because it was a younger skunk and not a veteran marksman with his foul juice. I have never been sprayed before. Skunks have torn open my garbage 50 times, they have clawed up my lawn looking for grubs. I never got mad! Hosing my bike and shoes at the start of a long weekend is going too far. What do I do now? Submerge my bike in a children's pool full of tomato juice? Thanks Pepe, you vile rodent.

That stinks! I will await other ideas on how to get rid of that smell, I have luckily never had to do it!

I guess I should use dish soap first to wash off any residue and see how much stink is left. I don't think I can salvage my cycling shoes and they are specialty cleats. I might try to save them with some sort of industrial cleaning substance or put them in a bag of baking soda and white rice for a week or two. It could have been worse. He could have hosed my face, eyes and hair at that range. Open to any suggestions on deodorizing tricks.

I got sprayed one night taking a shortcut down a long hill into a lower part of the city. I threw the clothes away. Pretty hard to get the smell out of your nostrils.
It is pretty pungent. I did the same and threw out the socks, shorts and t-shirt I was wearing and got the smell off me. The cycling shoes I will try and save because they are pricey. I am going to go at the bike with soap and a scrubby today and see if I can get rid of the stench. I have come close before and had them pull their little warning handstand but I was always able to back off slowly. I just startled this skunk by riding up my driveway at speed and he got spooked. I was very close to him. If it was a big skunk he could have drenched me. It would have made social distancing effortless! 😄

Ack! Very unfortunate! Hope the de-scenting process goes well!

I showed up at local "Crazy Larry" the welder's place one morning, and he had this trail of powered laundry soap going everywhere, and water, and upon closer inspection, an oil slick of Skunk musk everywhere.

He had trapped one in a live trap - probably trying to trap a raccoon - and then drug the trap - via a long chain - across his concrete pad and graveled shop yard over to the creekside to shoot it there presumably (how do you get a skunk out of a trap?) and it left copious amounts of essence on the way there.

A neighbor had one trapped in a similar way years ago, and made a friend out of it by feeding it through the trap. He approcached the trap gently and never got sprayed. I imagine he was able to open the trap and let it out eventually.

For my basenjis, I've found white vinegar works as well as tomato juice, and doesn't leave a sticky residue.
Cheaper, too. I always have a gallon on hand as it's great for softening old hide and white glue.

Holy timeliness...
First thing this morning Her Majesty opened the blinds and screams "there's a skunk running across the front yard"
SkunkyTales
1) I'm sitting on the throne. Its about 4:30am. Her Majesty had an appointment with a surgeon over in Tyler(about an hour away)at 7 for exploratory surgery for a lung mass. She had just let the dog(brain damaged Doberman) out in the backyard to take care of business. She comes back in the house screaming "TJ(dog) just got sprayed in the face by a skunk". Herself came out just fine. The dog took about a week to deodorize.
2) I jump on the riding mower out in the detached garage and fire it up. Its parked between the vehicles backed up to the wall between the doors. Out from behind it scurries a furry something. I just caught the movement out of the corner of my eye. It runs behind my car to the opposite corner and hides behind the trashcan. I move the can thinking it was a cat. Nope. Well, sort of. A polecat. Called animal control. We took the garden hose with a tapered nozzle and blasted it out the door.
