I absolutely loved Jack Bruce, and his bona fides are beyond question. That said, if I want somebody to drive a song the way I want a song driven, I never heard anything as good as Casady on The Other Side of This Life. Plus, wasn't he Jimi's favorite? His low end on Voodoo Chile was brilliant.

Hate to disagree with capnjuan (anybody want a gibsonette?), but Bruce was NEVER a part of mountain. Felix was the bass player! Admittedly one of their great tunes was written by bruce( theme from an imaginary western), and pappalardi produced some cream, and bruce did a few albums with leslie west and corky laing after mountain officially broke up, but he was not a mountainman. I remember seeing leslie west with mountain in the early 70s at george mason univ, and a few years later after west, bruce and laing broke up when he toured as the great fatsby. HE was so fat he couldn't even see his guitar! His show stank that night as he headlined a holiday spectacular at the capitol centre with several newer bands...what happened to those other bands? let's see, rush opened (caress of steel was their new lp), ted nugent was second (doing the first solo lp), reo speedwagon (around the live you get what you play for time, prior to tuna fish), blue oyster cult (on your feet or on your knees, baby! buck rules!) anf finally west.
