Veered from here.

Personally I can say good things about both of them but I cannot recall anything interesting from Mr. Bruce after Cream clotted. And much of their output never strayed far from 12 bar blues progressions.

Mr. Casady covered a lot more musical territory when you consider Jefferson Airplane and acoustic Hot Tuna as extremes. And he played a Starfire :)

So .... your're saying Jacks or Better to Open? Agree that the other Jack is more popular in the US, gets bonus points for playing a Guild, and arguably had cooler hair back in the day ... butt there's more to it than that. These were copied off of Jack Bruce's Home Page.

Special Appearances

He wrote songs for, and played with, dozens of established artists - not sure why his 'Mountain' material w/ West wasn't included suspecting copyright issues; Mississippi Queen (do you know what I mean) for example is missing. Butt conceding only for the sake of discussion that the other Jack was a 'better' player - however defined - considering the body of the One True Jack's work, his vocal skills, his versatility, and longevity, wouldn't these go a long way in off-setting any alleged 'better' thingie ... ????

I mean, if the test is which player would you rather have in your band, I think that changes things. If you want the load of writing and singing all your own material, then choose the other Jack ... in which case you wouldn't need a bass player of either of these Gent's magnitudes ...

The One True Jack!!!

With the exception of the Guild affiliation, I have to take Bruce. He's the Ainsley Dunbar of bass.
Eeek Dane!! one of us must have hit the wrong button; Frono, then you, then me ... votes 2 to 1 for Jack C ... unless someone voted without posting ... if this was FL, that would DQ that vote

I just voted - do I care  If this was FL we'd have to hang poor old Chad
We had an election for a county judge this summer. The two Gents had had issues before leading the sitting judge (encumbent) to lodge formal FL Bar Complaints against the other guy / eventual challenger three years before the election.

They ran against each other, there were three vote counts; the first then two do-overs, the challenger was the apparent winner but by the time they were going to swear him in, the FL Bar got around to hearing the judge's complaint against the challenger from several years before.

The FL Bar suspended the election winner's law license making him ineligible to be seated as a judge (Yes, even in FL you have to be a lawyer (paren; in good standing) to be seated as a judge ... he wasn't, they didn't seat him, they are now looking for someone to fill the job ... the former judge / election loser can't take it, the people had speakethed .... Oh yeah ...

I just put Bruce in the lead at 3-2. Of course if I could do a write in it would be Daniels.

Done. Feel free to revise your vote :)

Maybe we need another poll - Which Jack do you want in the room with you while you are listening to the other Jack's recordings?

Hi Jamie; when you changed the polling choices, the recorded votes were dumped. Counting my one (re)-vote for the One True Jack, I notice that he's in the lead however I sense Jack Daniels (the unnamed member of the Charlie Daniels band) will be the ultimate winner here ... (burp) CJ

Won't do that again. Apologies.

Of course maybe a few people will see the light and re-vote "correctly". OTOH if the best Jack does win everyone is going to look at me and figure I rigged it somehow anyway so...

It weren't me. When I voted it was 0-1-0, after which it was 1-1-0. Old Brucie can count on me.

I certainly will and, in protest, will stop wearing my Jack C headband as sit here at the PC ... I think because Cream flamed and died so quickly, Jack B was never, and won't be, as well thought of as Jack C in the US. More so than the Dead and their live, 20-minute Garcia solos, to my ear the Airplane was the exemplar of the genre but I was quick to miss Marty Balin.

Hi Dane; thanks for clearing that up ... wuz worried there for a minute ...

Just voted for Bruce - anybody who can play rock with Eric Clapton *and* jazz with John McLaughlin gets my vote.

Clapton never sounded better than when he was with Jack Bruce. I'm sure he's been happier playing with other people, but that' a different matter.

I'm not saying Clapton's playing was worse w/o Bruce, simply that the context that Jack Bruce provided, playing bass 'under' Clapton, has never been equaled.

I remember a Clapton interview, maybe in Guitar Player, back in the '80's. It seems that the interviewer shared this Humble Writer's opinion of Clapton & Bruce together and voiced it to Eric. Eric's reply? "Maybe so, but playing with Bruce was like going through WWIII, every time."

I saw a VH1 Classic Albums show last night on Jimi Hendrix and the Electric Ladyland Experience. Lots of film, bits of interviews with JH and people who knew and played with him particularly informally at The Scene. Among the people interviewed was Jack Casady. His remarks, obsevations, and comments from his interview were spread throughout the program. He was articulate, cool, and well-groomed. He looked a little like a bespeckled Gary Busey except his face is narrower and a little more pushed-in.

So many of the VH1 'former greats' look like they'd just been dragged out of a rehab center, gotten a haircut, given some fresh clothes, coffee, and a script; not Casady. Spoke without hyperbole about JH and the times; JH's endless search for musical expression including recording himself playing a comb and wax-paper kazoo over some of his own work. Unlike the spandex-gowned metallistas of the 80s and the Thuggists from the 80s and 90s, Casady - dressed in a dark suit and sport shirt - was self-possessed and certain of his talent and place in the musical scheme of things. I wonder how many useful parts of The One True Jack are still left; Casady was pretty impressive ... even without his bass.
