"Music Non Stop" - Señor Coconut y su Conjunto

Señor Coconut is actually German composer/musician Uwe Schmidt. The album this comes from, El Baile Alemán (translated, "The German Dance"), is all Kraftwerk covers done in a variety of Latin American styles. It's one of those rare records that works both as a sly joke and also as excellent music in its own right. Great fun from start to finish.

"Stop Your Sobbing" - Pretenders

This is a cover of a Kinks song, and Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders was later in a relationship with Ray Davies of the Kinks, who wrote the song. They have a daughter, if memory serves.

Chrissie is one of those singers who makes you really want a lyric sheet. Back in the day, I remember having this song playing when a friend stopped by, and after a minute or so she asked, "WHAT is she singing?" I knew the song from the Kinks version, and said, "'Gotta stop your sobbing now.' What did you think it was?" "Better stop sucking a hole."

And of course, that became what I hear when I listen to this song, for 40+ years now.

"Killing the Blues" - Robert Plant & Alison Krauss

It's hard to think of a more unlikely pairing than Led Zeppelin frontman Plant and bluegrass soprano (and virtuoso violinist) Krauss. But somehow they teamed up and created Raising Sand, a delicately beautiful album full of country-tinged vocal harmonies. It won several awards for Krauss, Plant, and producer T Bone Burnett, including five Grammy awards, one of them for this particular song (Best Country Collaboration with Vocals).

"Sky Saw" - Brian Eno

This is the opening track from Another Green World, a masterpiece album so influential that actual books have been written about it.

It's another one of those albums that changed my understanding of music. I hated it when I first heard it; now it's among my long-term favorites. It might actually be my top favorite.

"The Jungle Line" - Joni Mitchell

The Hissing of Summer Lawns is my favorite Joni Mitchell album, or my second favorite; it keeps switching between this and Hejira.

When I was 14, on my Christmas list, I asked for and received this album, George Harrison's 33-1/3, and an Alice Cooper album, perhaps Billion Dollar Babies. My parents did not know what to think.
