This is in my top 10 fave albums of all time. I listened to it constantly for a couple years. Johnny's Garden is excellent but the whole intro of one song leading into another, it's just brilliant work. Stills was only 24 at the time.
That first Manassas album is Stills' best work, at least for me. The first CS&N album was mostly him with Nash and Crosby in supporting roles. Deja Vu was a sprawling mess with drugs and personal dramas and conflicts interfering with what could have been an unbelievably great album, considering the players.
Stills 1 and Stills 2 solo albums are OK, but seem self-indulgent to me.
But that first Manassas album I can listen to over and over and over. It gives me glimpse of what could have been if Stills' ego would allow him to collaborate in a band with musicians like Chris Hillman.
Hell, Bill Wyman (who guested on "The Love Gangster"), said he would have left the Rolling Stones to join Manassas if he was asked.
The second and final Manassas album, Down The Road, is like Deja Vu: Portrait of a band where the people aren't having any fun.
