In another thread on here I was informed (need I say by the eminent Hans Moust), contradictory to the version Guild wants to make into a truth, the F-40 did not get to feature mahogany sides and back untill quite recently. The official version is it changed tonewood at the same time as the F-30 Aragon did.

I would like to dedicate this thread to the Valencia. Any pix or info you got on its many incarnations, feel free to post them here and share what you have with fellow forumites.

Hi Jonas: for the sake of your thread - here's a picture of a 1980 F40; spruce over maple. This one looks like it has a maple neck but they are listed in the Blue Book, which relies heavily on the research of Hans Moust and Jay Pilzer, with mahogany necks; I think it's light reflecting that washes out the darker color. Earlier this year, a 1973 model F40 was listed on GBase; spruce / maple but with a mahogany neck. The guitar in the pic is listed on GBase here: GBase F40 and has been there for some time - the guitar is in California. This one shows some 'Dankoing' just ahead of the bridge. cj

Thanx mate! Nice pearl inlays of the fretboard. Hadn't I known better I would have put the F40 designation down to a missprint for an F47 or something of that sort, maybe a GF something.

Hello cj,

and the date, for the change from mahogany to maple necks, given in The Guild Guitar Book is 1976.

Sincerely,

Hans Moust

Bump: As long as this thread is addressing the F40, might as well put a few pics on parade including it's near-relation, the F48.

F40, 1973 mahogany neck, Guitar Centers / Vintage Room about $1,900 - get a load of those 'goalpost' markings in the spruce...

F40C.jpg

Sunburst, 1974(?) yours for 268,000 yen ... don't know what that is in Kroners Jonas

Another F40SB - recent eBay auction:

f40sb76.jpg

Previously posted, F40 - 1980, maple neck; on GBase, listed at $1,100

f40e.jpg

F48: Mahogany version of the F50; same 17" body, block markers, bindings and so on; according to Hans' book, they did not sell well; back as a Tacoma.

F48, spruce over mahogany, 1973; 'sold' recently on deBay, $810 w/ seller-disclosed neck issues; 11/16/07; 'private bidding' also listed now on eBay / Thailand

F48.jpg

F48, spruce over mahogany, 1973, on GBase (on hold), $1,200

F48a.jpg

F48, spruce over mahogany, 1973, Japanese web page.

F48, spruce over mahogany, 1974, also Guitar Center, price unknown.

Of course, you could always pick up the sunburst up in person and save on the shipping    It's certainly a very pretty guitar. I take it the Swedes aren't doing the 'Euro' thingie? cj

Oh, you mean the currency? Thank God we're not! I'm not a believer in large economies. Economies have to stay in tune with the plot of land where a specific currency is used, or it's useless. Today Ireland is overheated and Germany is... well, underheated (!), all thanks to the one currency! :? Eventually every German who can afford it will move to Ireland

Somewhere there are those who believe the words competition and cooperation can be used interchangably. I find those words quite eachother's opposites! Well, let's not get to deep into politics and economics now, shall we?

One of the guys here, I think he lives in Europe has one that he has posted pictures of. I've got a picture of one from a Guild Gallery Magazine. Abalone bound, just an incredible looking guitar.

They are complements of each other, like yin and yang, rather than exclusionary opposites.

Well, in the big picture we've gained from not being part of that monetary union. Germany, France, and Spain are those who decide the pace for this continent; their natural resources and industries are the trendsetters. Who'd care about this sparesly populated little "apendix" up north, mainly covered by forests and rural farmland?

Also once you're in you can't back out.

Hi West; I looked around and couldn't find it; any recollection of which Forum/Thread? I'd like to see something that fancy too. cj

Cappy,

There is a member here from Europe, I can't remember his name, who posted one back before Don changed the forum to it's present format. He posted these spectacular pictures of it. For the life of me, I can't remember his screen name. It seems like he also had another rare model in superb condition.

Hi West: I'll keep looking; if the pic is still on the poster's webhost site and if I can find it, I can re-generate it. The problem is that the more all of us post our Heinekens off, the deeper the backlog of posts to wade through  ... but I'm on it!! cj

Do any of you guys HAVE a Custom Shop Valencia, the late 90's, early 2000's, made in Nashville jobs? If anybody does, let me know.

Thanks, Randy
