Great version of that tune.
You have to have REAL talent to pull off playing a polka dotted strat in front of a live audience....and THAT man has it! Absolutely fantastic live shows.

With the amount of posters they sell of him playing the SF..you would think he still played
one ...When did he stop..and how long did he play the SF..?
He was just in town a few weeks ago and I was not able to see him..

That's a great shame Jas.
Buddy's getting on; 71 now, and I can hardly believe it !

I've tried to pinpolnt before, the period in which he played the SF. With no success I'm afraid.

He also played a Nightingale for a while, and I think that he may also have played a Nightbird. Not to mention Guild 6 and 12 strings.

Nice acoustic stuff here.........."Buddy Guy & Junior Wells. Alone & Acoustic" Alligator D30709

It seemed like Buddy just shows up with it from time to time. When I saw him with one, at least on video, he was playing through a Marshall.

A puzzlement...

I was talking about Buddy's age and how much is he going to keep playing.
with someone in a guitar store before he came in..
He looks in great shape

on the show.... I had to work

I had that alone and acoustic cd in my hand the other day
I ended up getting another Dave Stryker cd, but that alone acoustic cd
went on a mental list..

Here's a very subjective area, but off-hand the only Guild I'd call gaudy was the one built for Merle Travis. I'd say that even the fanciest Guilds aren't gaudy, especially when compared to some Gibsons--J200 etc. And I say that as one who likes plain guitars--dot necks, nickel hardware etc.

I share the view that dot necks are best. I don't mind the gold hardware on my DV-52.

My vote for gaudy would be a Duane Eddy. Perhaps Hans could post a picture of one??

Just thinking about the Buddy Guy - Guild connection. I have a copy of the Festival Express DVD. This is a documnetary of a train full of Rock bands traveling across Canada. Guild must have sponcered the tour. Guild amps in many scenes. I highly recommend this one.

Looks like Buddy from early to mid-Seventies - circa the album Buddy Guy and Jr Wells Sing the Blues on Atlantic. I first saw him while in college - the opened for Bonnie Raitt (or was it the other way around?)

That night, Buddy made that SFIV sing, especially when he used his handkerchief instead of a pick. ;-)

msofman,

Pleased to make your acquaintance.

For my ear, Buddy sounded a lot fuller and richer back then.

sfiii,

Why does a Duaner look gaudy to you? The pickguard with the signature maybe?

Well I once saw a DE-500. Lots of gold, and yes a decorated pickguard.

sfIII,

I settle for gold if necessary, but I prefer old-fashioned nickel.

At the other end of gaudy is cheesy, and I think those old plastic peghead covers are cheesy.

Muddy Waters performing Hoochie Coochie Man and She's Nineteen Years Old, with Buddy Guy and Paul Oscher, from the movie Chicago Blues, in 1970.

Blues music is one of my favorites. But so are the folk songs, work songs, spirituals, and gospel that influenced the blues. So I thought this vid was great, and I think it would have been even better if they hadn't cut him off as soon as he started to talk about religious music.
