First guitar I had was something acoustic and horrible. The action was so high it changed the note when you fretted it. My mum got it for me for something to do while I was moping about the house after I had left school but before a car or work. I think I remember her saying it was $5.

First on I paid for was some no-name SG copy that had terrible action for $20 off a dude I knew. No idea what it sounded like cause I didn’t own an amp.

The first guitar I bought was a classical guitar in a shop while on shore leave in Mallorca, Spain when I was in the Navy. I'm going to say 1972 maybe. I don't know what make or model it was, I didn't even know it was a classical guitar, I just wanted to play guitar so I found a guitar shop and bought a guitar.

The first guitar I received around 1958 was a cheap square neck--probably an Oahu that I think my dad just got from one of my cousins that lost interest.
The first "Spanish" guitar was a Kay "Thin Twin" Jimmy Reed style that my dad actually bought me when I was taking lessons that one day turned into
my '63 Polara. Never quite sure why he did that but the Guild was a heck of a lot easier to play.
The actual first guitar I bought was a truly horrid acoustic Pawn Shop 12 string, I don't remember the make, but it was new and cost I think
$89. I remember taking it to the beach in 1967 and playing "Light My Fire" and in spite of that Vicki agreed to date me!

I bought a little Kalamazoo by Gibson KG10. Small, actually a student size. I was 12 I think and I must have saved up lawn mowing money and allowance dollars, 60 of them, at a place called Connecticut Music. I bought it because I liked the way it looked and because it had been there for a long time at $100.

I still have it. Finished is checked as heck but neck is fine. In really good condition they go for around $800. I took mine around to a couple of shops and I was offered $350.

I never play it because even though it's an easy player it doesn't sound very good to my ears. It's all mahogany I believe.

My first one 1982 was a Vantage Les Paul Copy like this that my mother bought for me:

that had to go soon for the 1st guitar I bought myself which was a Yamaha SG 1000S like this:

That went 1984 for a 1983 Gibson Les Paul Custom:

My first guitar was one that one of my older brothers had been given and had sat unused for a while after he had lost interest in playing guitar. I believe it was a Musima, made in East Germany. It was identical to the one in this video, apart from the tuning machines, but I'm pretty sure the ones in the video have been replaced.

First guitar I bought was my S-300, which cost pretty much all the money I had, most of which I earned working making sheep pens for a farmer in the Cheviot hills.

Gibson B-25 bought in 1979 with money earned working in tobacco fields. The original owner was a Navy veteran and the guitar travelled the world on a submarine. I changed the tuners, but have the originals in the case. The easiest playing guitar on the planet.

A Montgomery Ward Airline acoustic, 1963 or 64 with high action. Replaced it with year old 64 Gibson J-50 ADJ. Still have the Gibson.

First guitar was one I bought new in 1971 at age twenty - a Yamaha FG 160. A year or two later, a young kid broke into our home & stole it along with a banjo. They later caught the kid, but the instruments were long gone. On the plus side, the little jerk did end up having to pay restitution!

First guitar I ever bought was a 1973 Guild D-35. I saved up money from two paper routes to plunk down $275 for it, used, at Chuck Levins in 1975.

It is still in my possession 48 years later.

I saved up for the '73 D50 I bought "new" in 1976 in a similar fashion Neal, but shoveled some snow, mowed some lawns, raked some leaves, and even caddied some. It's still with me 47 years later!

Dad bought me a little Kay guitar when I was maybe 6 or 8 years old, not long after that, but a few years later, I learned like everyone, how to play "House of the Rising Sun". From there I was gifted a Yamaha nylon stringed guitar. Then the first I actually bought was a relatively inexpensive Ovation guitar. A few years after high school, I bought my first REAL guitar, my Guild '79 D25, new.

The first guitar I bought was an Aria nylon string. I traded it for a 12string (don't remember the make) but it was so poorly built that it was practically unplayable. Likely, I left it someplace when I moved away.
First "good" guitar that I bought was a D-25 all mahogany at Mannie's in NYC in 1973 (which is why I'm on this forum). I remember playing one and it had a fret buzz and the salesman said "let me get you another one" which he did. Including the case and they thru in one of those elastic band capos, it cost $193 (I still have the receipt). It helped put me thru college and graduate school. I rarely play it these days; it hangs in a place on honor on the wall of my office.

I'm a little confused here. The title of the thread is "The first guitar you bought?"

I would think that means you bought a guitar with your own money as opposed to stories about your "first" guitar the was bought be somebody else!

I'm confused that you are confused. When have we ever followed a thread properly? :ROFLMAO:

That's why I did both just in case!

"House of the Rising Sun" was the first song I learned on guitar too; Am the first chord.

I'm sure I've told this story here on the forum before but I doubt anybody remembers it so what the heck!

Being a middle class kid with an allowance, I never had/needed a job until after I graduated from High School. That Summer I started working for the first time. When the Fall rolled around and I started at the local Community College, I found I liked working a whole lot better! (Mostly because at 5:00 the day was over and there was no homework!) So after about a year of working (goodbye college), while I already had my T-100D my Parents had bought me, I wanted a nice Flat Top acoustic guitar. Of course it was going to be a Guild. At the Guitar store I played a D-44M-SB. I loved the all maple look as we had a lot of maple in our house and it was very familiar. However, I did not want a Sunburst. I wanted a more traditional natural top and Blonde sides and back. So I ordered a D-44M-BLD and put down a deposit.

After a couple of months of waiting I was informed that Guild was having trouble getting maple to make my guitar and would I consider anything else? I went down to the store (Red Bank Music in English Plaza), and played the guitar at the end of the row. It was a D-55. I was immediately smitten with the sound and decided I was taking it home. Since it was more expensive then the D-44M I had to pay the difference, but that was fine.

This guitar has been with me everywhere and of course I still have it!

Then years later I finally did get a D-44M-BLD:

Wow, your first Guild acoustic was a D55? I wish I had started my Guild journey with its flagship model...

Me too! I had to settle for the Madeira in my avatar. :) Thanks to Richard P, I finally got my D-55 a couple of years ago.
