Is the DV-72 like a unicorn of Guild guitar lore? I hear they only made 200, very hard to find, only made in Westerly over a couple years? How does it compare to the D55?

Thanks.

There were DV-52, DV-62, DV-72, DV-73, DV-74, DV-76, DV-82...
Hans' second book is still not published that would cover them.
To further confuse matters there were different inlay materials used, so such numbers like "200" might not be 100% correct.
There are tons of search results if you enter "DV72" (not DV-72).
This post gives some good info for example: http://www.letstalkguild.com/ltg/sh...d-maybe-original-guild-case-for-2000-00-Omaha (and you need to read to the end to see what I mean with the incorrect number)

Awesome playing. How close does a D55 come to the DV-72?

A D-55 will sound A lot like a DV-72.
It's my understanding that the DV-72 and DV-73 wood was hand picked from the best that was available.
This doesn't necessarily make the guitars sound better but they sure are nice to look at.
If you can find a DV-72 or 73 for a good price I would go for it because of their rarity.
If you can't, a D-55 is a very good second choice.

Thanks, this is what I was hoping would be the case. :)

Here's my comparison of my '76 D-50, '92 D-55, and '95 DV-73...

Dave, thanks. Great info. Critical. So when I go for a rosewood dread, looks like D55 would do it. DV sounds really hard to find, but D50 could solve the itch as I don't like a lot of inlay.

The DV72 Is really all about these awesome rosewood overtones and finesse.
It's not any more powerful than a DV52 or D 50/55 (maybe even arguably less?) but the voice has a subtle "je ne sais quoi" that I have never found on any other Guild Dread. Of course, being pretty doesn't spoil anything as far as I'm concerned.
I actually never thought I would ever part with my DV52, but was able to do so peacefully and relatively painlessly, thanks to the DV72. The bass frequencies are deep and rich too, it really shines across the spectrum.
Thanks for the kind words.

Thanks, bluesypicky. Thanks a lot.

Having just heard you shred that Guild, I am forced to either sell all of mine, or sell my soul to the highest bidder in exchange for some of those fingerpicking skills.

Is there a section in LTG where souls can be bought, sold or traded? Mine has a few cracks (repaired).

Actually the DV-52 would also fit that very well! And they are much easier to find compared to the DV-7x. http://westerlyguildguitars.com/guitars/dv52.html
Ralf

DV52s are also far closer construction-wise to the DV72, with maybe just slightly lower quality wood. DV52s are also arguably the best bang for the buck rosewood dreads out there. Ideally try to find one of the later ones with the high gloss finish and abalone rosette.

Nice find! And Jay Boone in Seattle is a great guy to buy from! (he is usually open to discuss the price).

Hey Westerly Wood, there are a lot of unicorns round here,DV72 seem to surface often, in the last year there been a few on craiglist,a coral,a couple of Turquoise,no Malchite(GREEN), last week a Dv72 on ebay http://www.ebay.com/itm/RARE-41-OF-...G-/261364508573?pt=Guitar&hash=item3cda89e79d and a Jv72 that caused a bit of ruckis, having surfaced three times in 2 years http://www.ebay.com/itm/281237985988?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2648.So their out there if you are patient and do some hunting you'll find one.
Not sure how they compare, but I do know from experience that you can two of the same guitar,in rosewood and they sound totally different, and I mean really different.
