Thanks Avi, My 1st good guitar was a Guild D50 in the mid 60s, I've played quite a few and owned several, they were all winners in my opinion....Steffan

in my opinion:

1962
1967
1968 (april thru august only)
1971, 72, and 73
1974 (June)
1981
1984, 85,86,87,88
1990 (january, april, september and october)
1993
1994 (june thru november)
1997
2008
2010 (march)

i have found these seem to be the best years for guild guitars...however, not for all models. For instance, in June of 1974 the dreads were exceptional, however the jumbos and 12 strings were mediocre at best. you can find my complete analysis for years and models at:

You must be psychic! My 512 is a March 2010 child and is, indeed, a special guitar.

Avi, more directly to your question, there are many, many opinions of which is the "best," and any sarcasm in answers to your question is not aimed at you.

There are many who feel that Westerly-built are the only true Guilds right through to the modern New Hartford models being the best the brand has ever offered, and even a few of us who are really pleased with our GAD/Asian models (note I said "pleased" and not "the best" :) ).

Corona-built Guilds are sometimes felt to be not as good as the rest, but there are some very fine guitars that came from that period as well.

I might suggest that an easier question to get a direct answer for would be something like "I am looking at a 19xx Guild, are there any issues I should watch out for?"

avi, it seems nobody wants to go out on a limb here, most of the time to keep from stepping on toes. I like '04 thru '01 Westerly models. I've got no complaints on my '91 or my '79 though, but I really like late Westerlys.

Thanks West for your comment, someone told me that guitars that were made in Westerly are better then guilds that were made in later years under Fender in Corona

hope that I didnt upset anybody

One of those things that people will argue about forever.

A lot of people swear by Westerly, but an owner of a very credible shop (and an excellent player) once told me that he prefers the later models; he thought the Westerly models were overbuilt, heavy, and "a little clunky". Opinion, obviously.

A lot of people say Corona made inferior guitars, but I know a guy with a Corona F50 and I'd put it up against any similar instrument made anywhere. Great guitar... and given the reputation, Coronas are often available for a relatively lower price.

The point I guess is that none of the rules and opinions and overall impressions mean squat when you're considering an individual instrument. All of these factories have produced great guitars. IMO it would be silly to decide you have to have a guitar from a certain place, or that you won't buy one because it came from another. If it feels right and sounds right and it speaks to you and you want it, who cares where it was made?

My two 1996 Westerly's heavy, overbuilt and clunky? No way. THE best year! Also, 1982 was also THE best year for Guild (my former AA and MkV)!

Im agree with you in generally but you can see in other instruments (like pinaos) that some manufacture period considered more successfuly then another

Gotta add another datapoint to those two, MY '96 D25. Lightest guitar I ever owned. I'm amazed at how durable it's been for such a featherweight. Now THAT's some "Guild magic".
