Hi guys and gals
just wondering what strings go best for a jumbo maple 6 string as I picked up a bargain gad jf30 yesterday from long & mcquades. The strings on it now I think are d'addario pb lights and they are a tad too thin and bright sounding...also they are old.
Thanks,
randy

For not too "thin and bright sounding" on a maple guitar I would suggest:

RED
Thomastik Spectrum
John Pearse Phosphor Bronze and Silk
Love me Thomastik Spectrums on my jf30 (not so on the JF30-12); makes it sound full and sparkling instead of thin and bright! :D
Haven't seen RED around here … :?
Don't like John Pearse strings on JF30 (but love them on my dreads)
Markus :D

Actually, I happen to have a set of DR rare mediums 12 to 54's that I bought to liven up my D25 all hog dreadnaught. I'll give them a go on the JF30! Thanks TMG and iJam! :D

ok...finally put the DR rare pb mediums on and after a couple hours of play time they have gotten richer and settled in nicely. Really nice sounding strings...thanks for the recomendation TMG and Ijam....eventually I will try some of the other recomendations but for now these strings are just right! I also installed a jjb "The Prestige 330" bridgeplate pickup (identical to K&K but half the price) http://www.jjb-electronics.com/prestige.html
This guitar sounds great through my little vox pathfinder (electric guitar) amplifier. Not bad for no preamp....really sounds natural.
Will post a picture of her when I get hold of a camera...she's a real charmer for sure...just lovin the jumbo low end...very open sounding compared with the all hog dreadnaught (GAD 25). Back to pickin! :D

Glad you found something that worked Randy. I have not partaken in the pleasure which is Maple, but would love to. I will have to make a mental note as to what strings to try if I ever do.

I would love to see some picks of the Burst on Maple. One of the prettiest combinations.

Posted before, but since we're on topic, here's mine again. It looks far better than I play.

That's a beauty iJam!

As promised here are a few shots of my Gad JF-30ab...it is not like the antique bursts they show on the Guild website....more of a reddish sunburst....kind of unusual but I like it.

It plays like a dream....lots of songs to be written inspired by the sound! :D

Hi Ridge...I remember you had a Gad spruce over Rosewood I believe (jumbo?) and then moved up to a USA Guild...maple is a whole other kind of animal...I used to have a dreadnaught maple 12 string made by Norman...loved it and played it for years....then along came Guild and I knew I had found the sound I was looking for. My F2121xl is awesome and this Gad jumbo 6 string has that nice deep sound I love. Sounds great finger picked or strummed. I am so happy I could just Crap! 8) :D

After reading about them here, I tried an order of the Euphonon phosphor bronze strings. I've been very happy with the way they sound on my JF-30. (12/54's.)

Well I've taken a big step in the right direction with these Martin Marquis 80/20 SP Lights...they are not harsh yet have punch and bite....On this maple with spruce top jumbo they are a great match....think I'll be keeping them for a long while :D :D :D
My fingers are getting sore as I don't want to stop playing...that's my sign for....they must be good sounding!

When they wear out I may try the coated version.
