For the maple guitars of Guild, was wondering which string you folks are using...80-20 or phosphor bronze? I'm NOT concerned with a brand, but a type. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

I like PB, but currently have monels on my DCE-3. The monels aren't quite as loud but have a really nice woody tone. So, equally good just different. YMMV.

Tony Rice Monels (Martin) would be great too, I agree with GG. Medium gauge, but I think most days, you go with the Ranch dressing of acoustic guitar strings = D'Addario EJ17s...:) or EJ16s, but I remember you are a bass player, so at least mediums for you.

Silk and steel in the heaviest gauge you can find. I'm dead serious, you want bell-like timbre, use silk.

Hey folks... thank you kindly for the input. With some help, a string decision was made. This may sound crazy, but...

Took the guitar to my music store. Walked in and Jody (Jansen Music, Aptos, CA) says, what ya got? Asked him if he had a luthier or if he was a luthier. He says, well I don't consider myself a luthier but I know a little. Hand him the case, he opens it and says...oh my word you have a maple Guild! Turns out he was a Guild dealer until Fender bought it them. Knows exactly what it is. Then he played it, looked at me and said, wanna sell it? Nope, but you can work on it. Asked what strings he would use. Ernie Ball 12s. Says if you don't like them, I'll replace them.

So... again... thanks everyone and reports are forthcoming.

Guild rules!!!

Did he put in a Tusq saddle for you too? What Ernie Ball strings did he put on.

Yeah, you don't see a lot of G-37s out there. Hope you're enjoying yours!

I know this is settled and done, but . . . for the sake of whatever.

I'm like 100% phosphor bronze on everything, and only differ on the specific string brand/type on each guitar. For my maple back and sides F44, I've been stuck on DR Rares for the better part of 15-20 years (before that I was getting free strings!). Though right now I have some Cleartone/Everly Sessions on their for sentimental reasons. I like them a lot, but not as much as the DRs.

Don't know what model of EB... Earthwoods? Went with 80-20.

Sold a lot of Everly strings when they first came out. Heard that they were great.

I appreciate the gauging of the Signatures, which are 12-16-25-33-43-53 vs D'Addario 12-16-24-32-42-53, providing a little more mid-low oomph.

DR Rares are though, are 12-16-24-32-42-54 and I maybe more appreciate having that heavier low E string.

I have tried some different strings on my beloved G37 but always have gone back to D'addario phosphor bronze. 12's.

My friend put some silk and steel strings on his G37 and I did not love the sound. Kind f meh and dead IMO. I recommended them to him as he had not been playing in years and years and wanted to start again and was looking for strings that would be easier on his fretting fingers.

I have been using DRs on my Guilds for years, as well. My G37 really likes the Rare 12s, I use the Sunbeam 13s (the round core has less tension) on my D40. Another thing I did with my G37 was drop it to D standard, I just capo when I need to play out of E standard. I dropped it, initially, because I was putting it up for a bit and wanted to relieve some tension on the neck while it was stored in the case. When I got it out to play it, completely forgetting I had dropped it to D, I was blown away by how it sounded. It has stayed dropped ever since.

.....the added "nut" width when you are capo2 for E doesn't hurt my lazy C chords either;)

I love the sound of my F30R with medium gauge and in D standard. This skinny little thing actually growls.
