strap button?

Hi everyone

I own a DV72NT-HG. I bought it new in 1994 and it is my pride and joy.

I wanted to know if adding a strap button would affect the value of my guitar.

I’ve treated this guitar better than my children and don’t want to mess it up. I actually purchased the button and couldn’t bring myself to drilling the hole.

Thanks

Todd,
Welcome to LTG!

I know how you feel... I bought a bone/abalone button for my G-37, and couldn't bear to drill the heel. Only two of my Guilds have forward strap buttons... both on the center line of the neck heel. If I want to use a strap on the others, I tie the strap on with a leather strip around the headstock (under the strings, above the nut). Some prefer to install the button more on the treble side of the heel, so the strap sort of wraps the neck heel.

For me, a properly-installed, well-placed (not thru the heel cap!) strap button wouldn't detract from value. But I don't now what the real die-hards would say...

If I were a buyer, it would be a moot point. No value loss to me.

Todd,

First of all, welcome aboard! Hope you hang around with us.

I've bought guitars with strap buttons in places I don't like. It sure hasn't stopped me. But, I can appreciate what you're asking, and when you have such an important axe to you it's a tough decision to do any modifications to it.

A strap button is hardly worth worrying about, though, in my opinion. Guilds are "made to be played" and a strap button is a no-brainer, in my opinion. I would avoid mounting it on the guitar side wood, though Guild does that today -- you need to provide a block on the inside of the body to make that work. I'd also avoid drilling into any molding. Best to put a small hole in the neck wood somewhere pretty dense. I prefer the underside of the neck, a la Taylor.

Oh, and I would leave this installation to a luthier. Putting a drill bit to my guitars is just a little too much for me to bear. :)

The concensus is positive on the strap button. I'm going to put it on.

Thanks for all the input.

Every acoustic guitar I own, from vintage to brand new - inexpensive to expensive - Martin to Recording King, gets a strap button first thing when I get it home, if it didn't already have one.

Take it to a local friendly luthier, and pay the man the 25 bucks or so, for drilling and installing.
Then you can always proudly exclaim, "Professionally installed."
