This may have come up before since it's a few year old but here we go anyway.

While trolling for Bill Evans stuff I ran across this fellow playing a Starfire V w/mini hums ( late 60ish?). The guitar sounds wonderful and his playing is quite good. He's got other videos that are worth watching. Glad to have stumbled across this.

Good player as well. I had a similar Starfire as a teenager when taking jazz lessons, and it was great for jazz and rock. My GSR Starfire is also a phenomenal guitar for jazz. Paul Bollenback has also been known to use a Starfire. I studied with him for a week 4 years ago at the Litchfield Jazz Camp/Festival, and he's a great player. Here is a clip of him actually playing.

He also has several workshop videos on YouTube in which he uses his Starfire, and probably more videos like the above.

It's not Jazz unless it's played on a 4" deep archtop with z floating pickup and a hell of a feedback problem. :)

Just kidding guys, that was wonderful. Great sound and his playing was incredibly good. I've always loved Bill Evans but never even considered copying one of his solos on the guitar. I've always felt that Evans was at the top of the Jazz piano heap.

Next thing you know someone will start playing jazz on a Telecaster instead of an L5. What is the world coming to? I love the clean sound of the neck mini-hum on my old Starfire IV and have often wondered what CE100 or X175 etc from the 60s would sound like in my hands.

Thanks for the tip on Paul Bollenback. I chased around and found a few clips of him playing and teaching and enjoyed it all and will watch some more. That also connected me with Sheryl Bailey heretofore not on my radar and I'll be checking more into her playing and teaching.

Back to Bill Evans and guitar (and away from Guild Content.)

A copy of this record was given to me shortly after it came out in 2002 by the drummer's sister.

At that time it somehow got lost in the shuffle and wasn't given the listening it deserved. It resurfaced yesterday morning and heralded in Bill Evan's day at my house. There some clips from it on the CD Baby page for the record. It's quite a wonderful set of arrangements/performances and I highly recommend it.

Interesting discussion. First because Paul Bollenback is such a great player. I've seen him several times, can't wait to see him again. Second because I just started jazz lessons Friday with another heavy jazz guy (Bob Devos). I no longer have a hollowbody guitar, chose the Epiphone Riviera (Elitist, with minihums) to study with, at least for starters. Just like that Starfire V. It can do anything. I will be looking for hollowbodies, but not because there's any urgent need. Jazz can happen on all sorts of guitar types.

Chris,

I spend time on the jazz guitar forum, and the Telecaster is actually more popular for jazz than one would think. Ted Greene was a Guild lover, but was also well known for playing jazz on a Telecaster. He's a legend in jazz guitar!

Ed Bickert is another example of a Jazzer that used a Tele to great effect.

I should say my comment about playing jazz on a Tele was somewhere between tongue and check and flat our sarcasm. Sorry about that. I am actually a HUGE fan of Ted Greene and have bought and sold 4 Tele's in the last 20 years or so. I love them and will get another one before it's all over. If you know of Ted Greene you may also be familiar with Tim Lerch who plays a lot of jazz on his Telecasters and owns a CE100D that was once owned by Ted Greene. I really like Tim's playing too and he seems to be a devoted and effective teacher.

I am only somewhat familiar with Ed Brickert but will seek out more of his work.
