I stumbled across an extremely low-key ad on Craigslist that offered "An electric guitar and some pedals." Normally, I wouldn't have clicked on it but for whatever reason I did. I think the headline probably explains why none of you detected it before (or after) me!

At any rate, I was the first in the door and it didn't take me a New York minute to make this purchase:

It's a 1980 Starfire 4 with harp tailpiece, rosewood board, and full block inlays. Gorgeous and dead sexy! I knew the second that I picked it up from its case that it was ultra-special and that it would be sticking around for a long while. But the other incredible surprise was plugging it in and hitting a chord. Oh, my lord, what a sound! The low end on this guitar is the best I've ever heard - bold and deep and rich - and the top end just sparkles! This beats the '67 Gibson ES-335 that I'd been lusting for by a country mile! The thing is great, just great.

I bought it for a price that is literally too low to publish. I can't bear to see grown men cry! Suffice it to say that I'm fairly certain that a lot of you would be thrilled to pay double (I would, however, be curious to know what y'all think the current value is for this one...).

The only issue is that an inch of binding is missing from the treble side of the first fret on the neck. You can see it in the first picture above. My guitar tech said that it'll take him 45 minutes to replace it with aged binding from his stash. Oh, and a bit of the Master Volume knob is broken off. Boo hoo for me!

Sweet! Value? I'd say $1200.

Those HB1s are something huh? Nice score! I love block inlays.

Needs a new switch tip though. :)

The CL title must have been pretty screwed up to go undected by Treem's radars......
As far as value, this guitar is worth about $200.00, and I'll make you an offer you can't refuse: twice it's value!
Should I PM you my address?
Now seriously, it is just awesome looking, and having been recently acquainted with HB1's myself, I know exactly what you mean with the "surprise effect" of the sound....
Enjoy it, great catch!

Thanks, everybody, for your kind remarks!

GAD: HB-1s kick butt. The only other time I was so caught off guard was from a set of DiMarzios in an old MIJ Ibanez Artist - a worthy competitor!

Twocorgis: Did you see it on the local CL? It was there!

bluesypicky: You're clearly not a great negotiator - you're offering close to what I paid for it! :D

I didn't. Might have just been a lapse in searching for a day or so. Was Guild in the title?

"Guild" was in the body of the ad, but the title was simply, "Electric Guitar and pedals for sale."

The text read "Electric Guitar - 1979 Guild StarFire 4. Maple Blonde. Great condition. Completely restored.," and it was accompanied by a very small cell phone shot of the guitar in its case. Then there was a list of 4 pedals.

Oh! One more thing...

Tucked inside the case was a humbucker. There are no identifying marks on it, but I was interested to note that the layout of the screws was the 2 and 1 combination found on HB-1s and old Ibanez but, to my knowledge, not a whole lot of others.

Can anyone venture a guess as to what this is?

Jeez! If I had such a stroke of luck, a boulder would undoubtedly fall upon me from a great height the next day.

I'm keeping a sharp lookout for any Acme delivery trucks in the neighborhood!

The guitar is at the shop, getting the piece of binding that it needs and a general set up. My tech (who I adore and is a genius) said, "Now that's a guitar!"

I might be picking it up today!
