Hi, all, first post here. My 1970 D-40 has "Special" stamped on the label inside the guitar. Anybody know what that means?

Welcome to LTG!
Could have a few meanings. usually something "custom" on her. Best would be you could post a few pictures of your guitar so we could have a look what the special parts could be.

O.k., I'll try that. It doesn't seem especially special to me, but...

Ralf's correct, a "Spcial" indicated some detail that wasn't "standard" for the model, perhaps fretboard inlays, or a different fretboard wood. Upgraded tuners are another likely detail.

In the case of D40's I've seen at least a couple that were "specials" because of dual pickguards, as well as a "DPG" suffix on the model number to note the same "variation"

It's also possible the detail(s) that made it a "Special" in the first place got changed over the guitar's life.;)

I had a Guild "Special" that was a prototype for a later guild model. Different wood; different inlay.

Both were used on later models with different designations.

Special means something was ordered by the customer that might've been a change off the catalog. It also might apply to a model that didn't actually exist yet in the catalog.

@chadt yes, could we please have more details?

Not tonight, I'm kicking back. I'll take some photos tomorrow.
