Just finished watching The Band DVD on the making of their second LP featuring the great clip of Rick playing his sunburst F50R...priceless footage! Too bad Rick is gone now but he never lost his pipes even in the end when he wasn't in the best physical health...man he sounded great on his F50R....

for some reason Guilds just look the coolest in beat-up form. "Meant to be played!" when i see a mojo gibson or martin i think "oops, there goes the appreciation potential." exception being Willie Nelson's axe of course!

There is also additional footage on Youtube of Rick singing with Janis Joplin, Grahm Nash, and Jerry Garcia from the Festival Express dvd....guess what Danko was playing? Yup a F50 but this time no sunburst and maple back and sides...I guess you need a Guild jumbo when you're doing sing-a-long with pipes like Joplin, Garcia, Nash...not to mention Danko all around! Gotta love Youtube!

The guitar does sound (and look) great. But I thought Rick played a laminated-maple-pressed-arched-back F-50, not a flat-rosewood-back F-50R.

Hi Frosty,

Well, I played that guitar and I can tell you it was a laminated-maple-pressed-arched-back F-50 with a sunburst finish!

Sincerely,

Ah - I thought so. Thanks for the quick confirmation, Hans.

I gotta say, part of Danko's appeal has to be because his voice always sounds like it's going to bust open, and some weird sound come out.

Man, I love The Band, and own a video of the Last Waltz. I know all that stuff and love it. Truth be told, I'm a Levon Helm man; greatest vocals ever!

Correct about the beat-up Guild appeal. Martin people are too finicky to let their guitars get much banged on.

Siwash, if you love the Band get that Classic Album making of DVD on The Band's second album where the Danko footage came from...plenty of priceless moments with Levon Helm and producer listening to playback of the original master types and them isolating particular tracks to highlight how special the instruments were played....I dig Levon Helm too, I understand he plays almost monthly or weekly concerts up at his studio at Woodstock and folks like Emmylou Harris, Elvis Costello, Allen Toussaint had sat in to visit with their old pal...if I were upstate NY, I would definitely drop in on Levon!

Levon sounds great as does Rick Danko...however, as Levon said on the DVD, Richard Manuel was always their lead singer...check out Georgia on My Mind by Richard Manuel on Youtube...now that's a great vocalist!

Hans, please tell us more about how you came to play the Danko Guild, how did you gain access to it and where does it reside now?

Agree: love The Band! I think their last studio album with Acadian Driftwood on it was as good as any they did. The Last Waltz had to be one of the best rock documentaries.

Rick Danko's Guild

Well, there's not that much to tell about it. The guitar was brought in for repair at the Mandolin Brothers and my friend Flip Scipio was the head of repair at the time. I just happened to stay at Flip's place which was above the store and since I was doing the research for the Guild book I had ample time to inspect the guitar and make photos of it.

Rick Danko was still the owner at that point, so it went back to him after the repair was done. Rick must be singing with the angels right now and I have no idea who ended up with the guitar.

Sincerely,

Hans Moust

You know, I've got Dylan's basement taps with The Band, the Last Waltz, Music from the Big Pink, and another one of theirs. I absolutely love "When I Get My Reward" by Levon, which is on one of the Circle sessions. I've got a Robbie Robertson tape, but just not quite the same, and one or two of Levon's solo efforts.

It's been my experience that not many of the people that I know, know The Band. . . until you start citing their songs, and THEN they say, "Oh yeah! I love that!"

Maybe the band name itself hurts their recognition.

My teenage sons will occassionally direct my attention to one of their recent discoveries. "Have you ever heard of..." usually followed by the name of a rock band for whom I can dig out a 30+ year old vinyl record from the closet.

It wasn't too long ago that one boy returned from an overnight at a buddy's house with news of a great DVD they watched. "Have you ever heard of The Last Waltz?".

Up on cripple creek,
Frosty

I've had a re-mastered CD of Big Pink in my car player for 8 years; Tears of Rage the fave....you're right Siwash about Danko's voice...like it was gonna rip open it any time.

That is too funny about the Last Waltz...I recall it wasn't too long ago I watched it for the first time and went on to learn about music of Van Morrison, Dr John, Joni Mitchell, Staples Singers, Muddy Waters....however, Dylan and the Band came first and will always hold a special place! Though I've never seen Dylan with a Guild...I am glad Danko and I share passion for that old F50 jumbo with the sunburst!
