Sounds like a marketing person's approach to luthiery. Smooth the edges of the hole where a crack used to be and call it a "sound port".

For extra marks, who knows what the series of holes in the hoods of old Buicks were actually called?

Still researching the answer to your question, John.
These days, though, they call them a Maserati!

I think I found it.

"As for the holes in the sides of Buicks, they're on Lucerne and on the Enclave crossover vehicle that's about to launch. There are three on each side for cars with the V-6 engine, four for the V-8. And they're fake. They no longer vent the engine or serve any other real purpose.

They were called VentiPorts when Buick's chief designer, Ned Nickles, cut them into the sides of a Roadmaster in 1948. They showed up on models until 1958, sometimes on the fenders, sometimes on the hood. They were reintroduced on a concept car convertible at the 2004 New York auto show and became part of the 2005 Park Avenue."

Almost - actually, "CruiserLine VentiPorts". Doesn't it make you want to drive a '58 Roadmaster, all 2 tons of chrome and steel, Anita Ekberg bumpers and yes, CruiserLine VentiPorts and all?

Those are lovely, Cap'n. And you're right, I was thinking of the '55 and '56, 127" wheelbase, 213" long overall (yep, that's 10'7" wheel axle to axle, and 17'9" overall), weight somewhere north of 4500 pounds. Oh for cheap gas and great big motors.

That green '55 is a stunner.

And many Mercis au Canada for helping us sustain our oil addiction ... It was in rides like these that many boomers made "... front-page drive-in news ...". They vanished but returned in the 70s in the form of ...

which later morphed into the 2-ton, $50K, 10 mpg SUV.
