So last night I was looking at a Takamine EG523SC-12 on eBay that was ending soon, and was still at $425 with no bids, and no reserve. I'm usually an impulsive guy.. But I told myself I shouldn't be spending money at this time.. So I let it go. Nice looking guitar, and from what I read, a great player.

So I go back to the list of 12 strings on eBay. I see this Guild D25-12 ending in 15 minutes at $375..

So I ended up winning it for $395.

The guitar was made in 1991. It's had a small 1" crack repaired in the neck - just below the nut on the bass side - in 2003. And it's held together perfectly ever since (according to the auction). I bought from a reputable guy, so I'm not too worried.

But anyways, I can't find much info on this guitar. It doesn't look like they are produced anymore.

I want you folks to tell me whether I made a good purchase or not. I know Guild is renowned for their 12 strings, so right now I'm feeling pretty good about this. Let me know if I'm right.

:) Looks to me like you did pretty darned well. Watch that neck crack with a 12 especially. If it were me, and I do this on all of mine anyway, I'd only use lights or ultra light stings to keep from pulling the neck, or in this case, the headstock too much. Man that's a pretty 12!

Congratulations.

I went to my local shop today to get a new pack of strings, and did keep the crack in mind when buying them. I got .10's... Which I use for pretty much all of my guitars. Like I said, the crack was fixed in 2003, and has held ever since.. So I'm not super worried about it. But that's the risk you take when buying online, I guess.

No those were dogs. Dogs!
I'll take it off your hands, because I don't want to see a forum buddy get stuck.

Do not feel good about your purchase........don't feel the least bit good or elated that you have this guitar on the way....right now................Feel G R E A T ! That was a smokin' deal. Especially if it included a case. The only thing is these are a little loud so if this disturbs your neighbours, be sure to drop me a note, and I'll take it off your hands for exactly what you paid for it, and you won't be out a nickle. Steffan

I'd say you did really well, IMHO. I was watching this one, too, and fell asleep at the wheel. It's a beauty!
New strings, tune it down to D and enjoy that classic Guild 12-string sound!

Cheers,
Joe

Welcome to LTG, kick your shoes off, relax your mind...

nice looking 12...and once you play it you'll think looks are nothing compared to sound! I use D'Addarrio EXP pb lights (.10) on my 12 and keep it tuned to pitch but many on this board turn theirs down. In terms of a good 12 capo, there are many opinions on that but I've been real happy with a planet waves NS Silver NS Silver Capo for my 12. (I use Keyser on 6s.) I don't see a strap button on the neck so if you decide to have one put on (or add one yourself) check out this thread for info Strap Button PlacementThere's also a thread on 12 string tuning Tuning Down a Guild 12

oh yeah, you can spend a lot of time here...have fun, jgm

The guitar comes with the OHSC. I wouldn't take my chances if it hadn't.

You guys have me so excited, now.. :)

I've got a capo that fits 12 strings nicely. It doesn't send the guitar out of pitch too bad.. I can't remember what brand.. Either way, I have a Rickenbacker 12 string that the capo works well on.

It might be more than you would ever need to spend on a capo, but I really like that G7th Capo. Looks pretty slick.

Wow, you made out like a bandit. I am amazed by some of the deals I am seeing on eBay, as of late.

With the Guild 12-string sound, you are in for a real treat. If that model sounds anything like my D212, you will be enjoying a very focused and bell-like 12-string sound, with a killer bottom end, and great overall balance. Not to mention the coolness factor, which puts Guild in the highest class of 12-string acoustic.

Nice score, indeed. Also recommend tuning down a step to 'D', then capo up as desired... And welcome aboard Scoogs...

Congratulations on your find!
That's a great part of Guild History.
That model has not been in production for a long time.
I don't recall what replaced it.

I bought a new a Guild D25-12 in the mid 70's.
It was a nice guitar but back in those days, all that I had to tune it with was an "A" tuning fork.
It took me a long time to try and tune the darn thing and by then I was too aggravated to play it.

My local luthier suggested having the bridge recut to accommodate a larger compensated saddle.
He told me that the guitar would sound a lot better and stay in tune longer and also stay in tune when using a capo, if I had that work done.

I never did, and sold the guitar in the mid 80's.
Now I wish that I still had it.
You know, Hind sight!
