...Can`t imagine EVER dropping the E down to D on this or any short scale bass.........

I do. 8)

Really, Michael? Seems like the string tension is pretty slack tuned up to E, figured dropping to D would be real muddy. I stand corrected. :)

I do too. No problems at all. Had a D-tuner installed on my solid DS'ed M-85 for some shows I did with Rosanne Cash so I could play "Black Cadillac" in the middle of the show. The song was recorded with a Turner Model 2 that has one on it. I use T-I jazz rounds on the M-85.

That SF was a real surprise. Either my brain really has a serous infestation of geezeritis or it remembers correctly never having seen a post 1970 SF-I.

I won't attempt to diagnose your possible maladies, but I do know I have seen at least one other SF I that was probably post 1970. It was at Olivia's (not there now). I seem to recall it was close enough to new that it had the case candy. It was a cherry Starfire I with the Guild humbucker. What made it memorable is that it had a metal cover over the strings in the location where the bridge PU would have been. Since my memory of the date hinges on just when the Guild humbucker actually appeared, it is possible that the bass I recall was a 1970 instrument. The fact that the '72 linked to above does not have the silly cover and no obvious holes from where it was removed suggests that the specs did change a bit.

This search suggests that Olivia's was calling it a 1972.

Hey Dan, were you ever playing in Rosannes` band at the same time with Denny McDermott on drums? Denny is an old childhood pal of mine. Still get together for some music once in a blue moon.....

No, sorry; I don't know him. The album was done w/ Brian MacLeod, and the shows I did were with Dave Mattacks.
