Yet another price drop!!! I'm losing money on this deal, but I need smaller, short scale guitars now..
I purchased this sweet D40 in 2013 from the original owner. It is in remarkable outstanding cosmetic condition taking into account its age.
In 2013, Tom (Fixit) did a refret, fretboard level, and installed a bone nut, bone saddle, and K&K pure mini pickup. Invoice available. Minimal fretwear.
1970 was a transition year for Guild. Al Dronge was still working his magic. The silk screen logo, one-piece Mahogany neck, stacked heel, and the “Guarantee/Guild Guitars, Inc.” label, are all indicative of this transition period.
It has open back tuners stamped “Guild,” and the Guild shield outline truss rod cover, from vintage, golden age of Guild. Spruce top (with some nice grain and bear claw) and Mahogany back and sides. Serial number AJ-390X.
It has a 4” crack on the side that was repaired by the original owner some 40 years ago. Hardly noticeable. No other cracks in the wood. The top is in great shape. There are some dings in the lacquer back and sides. (see photos)

Bridge height is 10/32nd, saddle height is 4/32”, action at 12th fret is 2.25 mils or 6/64”
Lots of sustain and depth for a mahogany guitar. Neck is about like the two other Guild dreads I’ve played from that era. Easy playing. Neck thickness and profile is very consistent up the neck. The string spacing feels perfect and relatively spacious to me. The tuners stay in tune, but are a tad wonky, and could probably use some lube and TLC.
Comes with a TKL 6-latch generic case.
I am open to offers, especially for a short scale 000/OM with 1 11/16" nut. Tell me with a pm or email why your offer is a fair price. I've sold a number of Guilds on this site over the years with no complaints.
I am technically challenged but I do know how to zoom and will do so for serious buyers.
Paypal or cash only. I will eat the paypal fees. Shipping is negotiable depending on destination.
I would prefer for you to do your own inspection in person. I hate to put any guitar like this in the hands of the shipping companies. I've shipped quite a few guitars and I know how to do it.
SHIPPING AND RETURNS: If it is to be shipped, here are my conditions: I would like to offer to take the guitar back for any reason, as some sellers do here on the LTG forum. However, I do not like the idea of getting into the in the shipping stream any more than necessary. Accordingly, I will only accept return of the guitar if my assessment of its condition is materially inaccurate. In such a case, you pay full cost of return shipping, including full damage insurance. I'll refund in full to you once it has arrived back to me in the same condition it was sent in.
I will make a donation of 3% to LTG upon completed and final sale through the forum.
