First-year Guild. No evidence of a serial number ever having been assigned to it. Unusual dark red sunburst.

The guitar is completely original, except for the Franz cover, truss rod cover, heel cap and the pickguard. I do have the original pickguard, but it was unfortunately “bedazzled” by a former owner.

There is shrinking in the binding here and there, a couple of binding patches, and it is slightly pulling away in four spots (front and back of the valley in the cutaway, and front and back of the treble-side waist). There is zero binding rot. Fret markers at 14 and 16 have shrunken a bit.

No cracks, no body damage, and the original finish is in good condition. Little bit of wear on the back of the neck, which is to be expected.

The nut width is a generous 1 3/4”. I had the guitar refretted about five years ago. Playability is excellent.

Someone with time and patience could address the binding issues. I decided to leave it as is and just play it!

Comes in a period-correct hard shell case that at some point was painted gold! It is far from a thing of beauty, but all the latches work, and it certainly adds to the authenticity of the guitar.

I recently retired, and promised my wife I would downsize my collection to only those guitars that get played regularly. Unfortunately, this Savoy sits unplayed as I have gravitated toward modern Gretsch archtops. It is a shame to own it and not play it, so I am offering it up here on LTG for folks who can appreciate what it represents, having been made at the dawn of Guild’s history.

I would like to get what I have into it, which is $1500, which includes shipping CONUS. Price reduced to $1,100, shipped.

Pleas feel free to PM me with any questions you may have.

Just to clarify…

The guitar has its original Franz pickup. The black plastic cover is a replacement.

Interesting there is no serial number. My 1953 X375 ser #1175 has a label inside the body.

There was a 1954 X150 on vintageguitar that showed a label like mine inside the left f hole as viewed from the front, same as mine. If you close up on that f-hole you can see it but not read it.

There is no label, nor any shadow of a label that would have once been there.

I have never seen a labeled 1953 Guild with this dark red sunburst. I have seen a few other early examples with the same finish. Perhaps Guild experimented with different shades of sunburst before settling on the yellow/orange sunburst seen in production models.

This is a great example of a production sunburst color. Much lighter than mine.
