(sorry, this is not a "Dear Diary" story :D)

. . . who worked at the famous Indigo Ranch Recording Studio. This was a famous studio in Malibu, California started by the Moody Blues and Richard Kaplan. Hundreds of great recordings were done here and was known for its incredible gear list, creativity, top-notch crew, and exacting standards (as well as more than a few tales of infamous rock and roll debauchery). It closed in 2005, and the original studio burned in a fire a few years later. :( Besides the Moody Blues, Neil Diamond, Van Morrison, Neil Young, The Beach Boys, and Bob Dylan, and Olivia Newton-John are a few of the people who recorded there.

The former studio engineer I met started as a totally green 24-year-old and had his christening by fire under the tutelage of some pretty famous engineers and producers. I guess he worked a lot with Deane Jensen who is legendary in the audio engineering field. He designed and built numerous recording consoles, many of which are still revered today in the digital age. I got to hear lots of great stories about famous rock stars, something I completely love.

I'm going to lend him a book that I've recommended here before--Temples of Sound: Inside the Great Recording Studios. Although it can get somewhat technical, it has a lot of great stories about how some of the most famous studios were designed, built, and used. I'm gonna grill him for more stories too.

Hi JP; speaking of gear lists, this page Sonic Circus was apparently an effort to web-auction the gear. For example, a close up from that page of a Fender vibro champ is marked 'Indigo'. The page looks dead; clicking 'home' gets you nowhere. Some of the Indigo gear was sold on eBay; I think either Steve's Stewart or his TacoChamp has 'Indigo' on it. Anyway ... post all the juicy tid-bits you can ... tell him you'll change all the names to protect the guilty ...

That's right. I remember that page. It's hard for me to look at it because I start getting too many impure thoughts. Although we talked at length, I didn't find out about his background until the end of the party. The stories he told me about were mostly about meeting people like Neil Young and Neil Diamond, and not enough stories of the stories we all love to hear. I'll update after we meet again next week.
