The backstory of my D35:
http://www.letstalkguild.com/ltg/showthread.php?175762-New-member-Guild-owner

My guitar came with a Fishman Rare Earth pickup when I bought it early this year. I barely got to use it because I don't do gigs yet, nor do I have an acoustic amp to use it on. The previous owner of the D35 has expressed buying it from me a couple of times now. I kept saying that I was keeping it for the time being in case I actually get the courage to do open mics. Haha!

Anyway, this last time that he asked to buy it, I said yes. Needed the spare money and right now, I don't see myself doing open mics anytime soon (I've got a loooong way to go.) I had my guitar tech/guy/luthier remove it today. I would have done it myself, but I read on the manual that there was adhesive involved. Turns out there was none and removing it was easy peasy! I wasn't charged for the removal so the only loss I made was from a couple liters of gasoline. Hehe

When I played Nina (that's what I named the guitar,) she sounded different! Livelier! The bass was fuller! Even when she was capoed up to the third fret, I still felt a louder than normal bass response. It was like playing a new guitar! :)))

Obviously, the weight and position of the pickups made a difference. Didn't realize that it made that big of a difference! My newbie-ness is showing, pardon me! :D

Now, I am planning on getting a new pickup down the line. I currently have my eye on the LR Baggs M1. Is it alright to not install the end pin jack and just tighten the clamps to the guitar's soundhole and let the cable and end pin jack hang loose like this?

I'd like to remove the pickup when not needed. Keep in mind that I would be doing that on a live, and possibly band, setting, so I would be standing up and moving around, etc.

And for those who LOVE pictures:

Great story.

Regarding the tone improvement, I have a theory. Since these pickups sort of clamp onto the edges of the sound hole, I wonder if it was damping the vibration of the top.

That's a very pretty guitar . . . I really like that amber-colored top.

Sorry, I don't have any experience to share re: "quick-release" pickups!

Nice guitar (and landscape)....

As to the sound, I'm with Dave.... the clamping of the pick up leaves little to no doubt on the vibration dampening of the top.
That's something you want on a tennis racquet, not on a guitar top! :)

O.K. somebody, anybody: Why wouldn't the installation of a K&K Mini be best? Beautiful guitar btw.

Peace

Probably not the best if you really want to avoid installing an end pin jack. Otherwise, it would be one of the best choices, IMHO.

Of course there's a "vintage" (I think it's called) option, which uses a mini jack and doesn't require enlarging the end pin hole. That one allows restoring to original, but I've seen some negative comments regarding the smaller plug and jack.

I use Baggs M1Actives in my guitars I play on stage and really like their sound. I recently had one moved from my D55 into my Martin 00-16DBR and did not notice an appreciable difference unplugged in either guitar before or after. But that could be my 66-year old ears! My tech had a special metal end pin he put in the hole that had been drilled for the 1/4".

Howdy, I have the same year guitar and ironically I had that pickup as well but never installed it. It's really a great pickup btw. Is your guitar really amber like that or was it just the pic. Look's fantastic, my 79 is darker than the rest of my guitars but not even close too what your top looks like, congrats. How is she holding up for you, everything in good working order? I had my frets dressed this summer and now playing the guitar is an absolute joy, the setup done was so nice and everything is jiving together again.

It's really amber like. I have been thinking of having it refinished to a sunburst. I'm not concerned with resale value anyway cos she's a keeper. :)

If what I read here and online is any indication, then I think it needs a neck reset. But I can still play the heck out of it. It's got some work done by the previous owner. I had the fretboard leveled/refretted. I haven't used the pickup aside from that one time I was at my luthier to see if everything was working well. That's why I'm selling it back to the guy I bought the guitar from.

Thanks for the replies everyone! I now do think that the pickup clamps are the culprit. I don't know if they were too tight or not, but I'm glad I had it removed!
