have you ever sliped another guitar past the wife and rotated it with the others so you would not have to tell her you just had to have another ?

 Well, I have definitely CONSIDERED IT! But so far , she IS the good voice of reason that I need to hear....and helpful too. She'll say "Why get THAT when you really want...THAT. Better to spend a bit MORE cash and get the ONE you want" Cant argue there. :D

Yep !! My latest F30 I just slipped into the house. Took her til the weekend to spot it, (that old thing, nah I've had that for ages....), another week before she was tipped off that it was a Guild.

Nope. Mrs Fro knows enough about my basses that she'd spot the new one immediately. Besides the place is so full of "stuff" that there are no good hiding places.

WHAT?? Are you nutts?!!! I never once lied to my mother or tried to fool her. Mom: "I'll always know", she drummed into my head for years. I became so guilt ridden I'm thoroughly convinced that every woman knows what's goin' on; be it a longing or an actual purchase. Princess always knew pre-GAS; always knew it was coming even before I did.

Peace

To get right to the point of your question and not hem and haw, YEP! She finds it eventually but the secret (if there is one) is to have a whole bunch around and keep her confused!

But it's all good.

Nope!! No way it would work and the aftermath would be ugly. Better to take the beating up front. :D :D

Nah. No way. Never in a million years. Not a chance. Yes.

Time to buy her a guitar?  Steffan
That's what I did a couple or three years ago. I even installed a nice hanger in the bedroom so she can grab it (the guitar!) whenever she has the urge.
And I can play it (the guitar!!) anytime I want to, as well.

Strength in numbers,
Joe

Would that conversation have occurred in regards to a poor orphaned Hoyer that recently crossed your threshhold? On a related note, doe she have any sisters who share her marvelous sensibility and might be interested in a poor old bachelor Yank?

Never having been married I never had to worry on that. However when I brought home Blondie, Hally wouldn't keep tune for a month, I guess that's the equivalent of not talking to me, and when I brought home Ritchie they both wouldn't talk to me for a month! They say inanimate objects can't get jealous, but I guess we know better than that around here, eh? I finally discovered the only way to keep the peace was to play all 3 of 'em if I wanted to play any one of 'em!

I wish I could, but if she found out, I would only have one arm after she got through with me. That would mean no more guitar playing. Don't get me wrong, she does talk about what guitar I should get next, but I have gone through 3 different guitars in the past year, so I think a cooling off period is in order. Save up some "credits" for a nice one.

I have four Guilds hanging in my office/cave and "they" insist that I hang the banjo in the hall! "They" also insist that two other "off brand" guitars hang in the bedroom.

My wife finds it all "quite amusing and somewhat entertaining/perplexing." But at least I find understanding here with my fellow addicts.

To the original point, I say sneak 'em in and explain 'em later, right after she shows you yet another pair of new shoes!

as i've mentioned in another topic, i've had the opposite happen. i told my wife i wanted to sell my 1987 GF-25NT in order to buy another Guild. her reply? "why would you sell your old guitar? wouldn't that be like selling your arm?"

more recently, just over the weekend, i showed her a guitar on eBay that i was obsessing on. she said, "that looks like a nice one..." and went back to reading. :D

part of the back story is, i just put her through graduate school. i don't think i'll be getting much push back on a few guitars, at least for a little while. ;)

also, know this. the women in our lives are very perceptive, probably far more than you know.

i would call anything that smacks of deception a Bad Idea, and like others have indicated, i'd rather take a small hit up front than the bigger hit later...

oh, on a related note, my friend recently told me this truism:

there are three prices you pay for any luxury item:

1. the price you actually paid for it.
2. the price you tell her you paid for it.
3. the price you pay when she finds out what you really paid for it.

:D
