Okay, so I'm not sure how to describe these pickups. Other than saying they are A LOT DIFFERENT than the Guilds and Seymour Duncans in my other guitars. Kinda twangy and a bit wimpy. It'll take some playing around for awhile to get a handle on what I can do with these.

Anyway, the S-73 showed up today and it's in quite good shape: has one scuff on the headstock but other than that no real blemishes; one of the knobs is missing the DeArmond logo; and the frets are pretty worn. However, the frets were never done properly to begin with anyway so I'll be learning how to work on 'em (this was intended to be sort of a project/learn-by-doing sort of guitar) or else continue to snag my left hand on the edges of the frets (ouch).

All in all, I'm quite happy with my $275 guitar (including a case and shipping! - let's all watch and see what that one on Ebay goes for - sans case).

These are the pics if anyone wants to look. Enjoy!

They're multiplying.

BTW: Danerectal -- that Strat/Tele case I had that we talked about didn't hold the S-90 so well. I think this cheap-o case the DeArmond came in will, so the S-90 may have found a new home and the D will have to go into the crappy original S-90 case.

Wow.

Beauty of an emerald-green guitar, eh.

(;->))

Seriously, nice axe. Congrats. Crazy style to those pups. They certainly look way cool.

It's up to $280 this morning.

That one you posted looks like the frets will need work soon as well. $275, hot damn! One of the members of my old band had a S 73 and I remember those buckers being pretty nice. We used it with an Ibanez tube screamer. Nice buy.

The good news for mine is the frets are high so I have a lot to work with, and my housemate has the tools (he's building a bass right now).

As for effects - I have none. Don't need with those other two rock machines of mine! Eh, I'll experiment with the D.

I've been puzzling over the "wimpy" description all day. Not what I've been hearing from my S-73 at all. It is a twangy set of humbuckers, more bite and bright on the bridge than I'm used to, more of a single coil, maybe even tele vibe than I've heard from humbuckers before. My neck p/u did require some adjustment. It was too low. Raised up a bit, things got interesting. Don't know how you'll find it, but I stay on the neck only and middle positions. Played almost exclusively through tweed pro types so far ... I've grown quite fond of these Goldtones.

Perhaps the difference is effects. I always have some clean boost, delay and reverb on. No idea what they sound like without.

Yeah, I'll have to give it more play time, which I haven't really since I just got back from a road trip.

A couple factors in my initial reaction:

1) I'm comparing the sound to the Seymour Duncans in my '96 S-100 and the H1's in my '72 S-90, so it's a much different sound;
2) My amp can be tempermental -- a Marshall JCM 900 in need of an overhaul (at least the pots anyway);
3) No effects. The other two gits are rock machines without any.
4) The dude that had it did not know anything about setting up a guitar, so I'll have to do some adjusting. When I got it three of the strings were laying on the frets and buzzed like hell. I adjusted the action and intonation enough to plug it in and be somewhat satisfied with it, but I'll do more later.

So we'll see!

Regardless, I dig it for what it is.

So we'll see!

If it turns out to not be your cup of tea, I know a nice S-100 that could use a matching green cousin to pal around with... :wink: :D
