Is it ok to send two cased guitars in one box? I'm going to ship a startfire 3 and a T-100D, and I could save some $ by putting them in the same box. But I'm concerned that there wouldn't be enough styrofoam peanuts or crumpled paper between the cases, and between each case and the side of the cardboard box.

What's the optimal amount of peanuts/paper around a guitar case?

Darryl, l was thinking that if i had to ship a guitar, I'd get some of those swimming pool 'noodles' the kind that you hold on to float, 4 or inch diameter, and use them as bumpers. Put a couple on top, on bottom, and on sides, then use a strap, belt like with velcro ends and wrap it around guitar cast to hold everything. Kind of like an improvised molded foam case. Then the cardboard. Just a thought. I once sent a dulcimer to my brother wrapped in few layers of paper backed fiberglass insulation, worked fine....thinkin' outside the box. Steffan

Steffan,

Are you a relative of Graham's?

But seriously, those bumpers might be the next thing in packing. How hard or soft are they? If they are too hard to too soft, the impact on the outside of the box would transfer to the case. Maybe it would be better to tape them to the inside of the carton rather than on the guitar case.

Darryl, they're pretty dense, kind of what they use in the bumpers of cars, but they return to original shape, Godin, makes their Tric molded cases out of foam. They are extra light and totally protective. Saw a Godin rep one time throw one across the room in a high arc, it bounced a couple of times and the high end guitar inside was just fine, and in tune. I think noodles are about 6 feet long, and you could slice them down the middle like a submarine sandwich, and use them that way too. maybe even with a little doublesided foam tape. Good luck. Graham and I are long lost sisters! We'll meet some day though. Steffan

Um, yes.... Graham....sure.. right.. that's it, ha ha - we're like two peas  in a pod. At the moment he's indisposed and has authorized me to take charge of all his affairs, musical and otherwise, trust me.

P.S. How's your brother Larry and his other brother Darryl?

All due respect - two guitars in one box doesn't sound like any sort of good idea (if they're in OHSC at least). To get enough room around (and between) them the box would be huge and clumsy - perfect for putting *other* boxes on top of in the delivery van... Plus, don't shippers charge extra for an oversized box?

You'd have to put together a box to hold them both, and unless you're very careful it probably wouldn't have the structural strength that a new/single shipping box would have.

I'd say spend the extra $$ and send 'em separately if you want them to get there safely.

Punky,

I think you nailed it. I'd need a double-size box to get as much packing around each case. And a double-size box so big might even cost more than two regular ones. And I hadn't thought about the double-sized box going under everything else.

I've never seen a guitar company's shipping box big enough for two full-size guitars. Maybe they do with mandolins, but I'm going to stick to the good old fashioned way. Like Oscar Brand.
