Just got the D40 back from Chicago Fretworks. Neck reset, re-fret and complete setup. As long as it was there, I had them install a bone nut and saddle too.

Incredible! She looks and feels like brand new and sounds even better!

I had my doubts about the bone saddle, but am I glad I went with it! I’m basically a finger-picker, but spent most of last night messing around with a flat pick just to hear her ring. What a rush! The tone just goes on forever.

I could go on and on, but I’ve got to go back and play a little more. My fingers are complaining a little, but my ears are loving it.

West, she's a 1979 D40, low milage, original owner. Only taken out on Sundays.

Jgmaute, here's a not-very-good picture. If the sun ever comes out I'll try to get some that do her justice.

D40 looking sharp!

How did you make out with your case quandry? I know you didnt want to part with your artwork but the case was wrecked. Did you ever come up with a solution?

Likely she's better than new, highly doubtful you'll ever regret spending the money to make her right. I feel the love.

Thanks so much, everyone! I’m still on a “new guitar” high, playing and enjoying the hell out of her. At the rate I’m going now, in about six or seven years I’ll be able to post a clip of my playing for you.

Hmmm. A lot of questions; let’s see if I can cover them all…

CWG and TonyT – Thanks so much for helping me decide to have the work done there! I couldn’t be happier with Steve and Dan’s work. You can’t tell the neck has been reset (Dan said it actually came apart pretty easily). She plays beautifully, and as you can see looks great. I highly recommend their work. And they didn’t laugh out loud at my playing!

Treem, the total cost was $625.00. That’s for neck reset, re-fretting, complete setup, bone saddle and nut and detail/polish. From what I’ve heard, that’s a good price.

BluesDan, the B25 case is on a back burner right now, but what I think I’m going to do is:

Peel the vinyl off the old case.
Trim a piece of wood slightly larger than the contour, stain and finish.
Glue vinyl on said wood.
Hang on wall.
Tell a million stories (mostly true) when people ask about it.

Gotta love a D-40. My first experience with Guild was a '76 model, which I played for several years. I've always regretted having let it get away.

Man, that seems more than fair for that amount of work! Bet it would have been a lot more at Third Coast...

Man, the guitar looks wonderful... congratulations!

I'm getting weary about the neck re-set work required at some point on my F112. It's a good 5 years away from it being mandatory, but I wonder if I should really put it off. On the other hand, I've heard some horror stories about Guild re-sets. I've got two GREAT luthier options:

But... I still worry about something going wrong, etc. How long is a good neck re-set going to last?

$625 is very close to what I paid for pretty much the same service on my F20. A new bridgeplate & some binding maintenance was included.
