Interesting photo . . . that's what an earthquake & city-wide fire can do. Yikes.

Is there a print of that available commercially?
I love stuff like that, I could study it for literally hours.
Thanks!

Gotta confess, I was expecting a Starfire guitar of some sort.

  That's what I was thinking initially as well. Great photo, Treem. Thanks for posting it.

Curious. Just last night I was reading about the 1906 earthquake and fire. According to the account I read the firefighters tried dynamiting existing buildings in order to halt the progress of the fire. Instead most of the time it only ignited new fires.

It was my understanding that Funston's efforts to halt the fire by dynamiting firebreaks (all the water mains were broken) did result in saving a good part of the city. Certainly he was thought well enough of to have a fort (Fort Funston, at the S end of Ocean Beach in SF) and street named after him.

What is the contraption floating in the sky in the upper left corner? Jules Verne? Roger Dean?

That was my question, Ravon. What the hell is that??

It is probably part of his kite system. I think the angle of view is distorting it.

I believe that UFO is really just damage to the photo print that was scanned.

 Amazing photo. Like Al, I could enjoy studying something like that for a good long time. It certainly makes me want to learn more about the SF Earthquake and Fire, and this guys photography. What a bizzare craft floating in the air...whatever it is  Thanks for posting it Treem.
Glad this one was not about you somehow accidently destroying your Starfire, That was my first thought.

Does anyone know whether a "before" photo exists? For those of us not familiar with SF, it would help to be able to compare.

I've done a little more reading. It seems the dynamiting had mixed results, but in one instance it did prevent the fire from spreading to a large residential area.

There are "before" photos of San Francisco, but none that are of that aerial view, as far I was able to discover. You can see many more photos here: http://www.sfmuseum.net/1906/photos.html
