Hello, all:

I have a question regarding the top wood on my Mark III. I believe it's a 1980 model, and it's my understanding that the top wood changed on this model from cedar to spruce right around this time. Can anyone confirm when this took place?

If I were to guess, by the looks of it it's spruce. I can included a photo to assist with the identification if someone tells me how!

One other thing I've always wondered: what are the chances that this guitar's fingerboard and bridge are Brazilian?

Thanks!

Hello jciampa,

During its history Guild changed from spruce to cedar and back several times. And even during some periods it was possible to order a classical guitar with a different top wood than the species that was mentioned in the catalog.

Just go ahead and email me a good quality close up shot of the top and I should be able to tell you what the species is.
You can email photos directly to: guitarchives@wxs.nl

And yes, it is very well possible that a Mark 3 from the year 1980 has a fingerboard and bridge made of Brazilian rosewood.

Sincerely,

Let me know if this works.

Whoa! That's a really orange looking one; maybe it's just the lighting! At first glance that looks like spruce to me, but go ahead and send me another one at my regular email address if you want to.

Sincerely,
