Rumour has it that the DV-4 and DV-6 will be made in Mexico. So much for an affordable American Guild. I guess they meant North American, as in NAFTA. :(

OK, it ain't so.

Well, where did you hear this? The only announcement we've seen from FMIC was the move from Tacoma to New Hartford. We've seen nothing official about specific models and which would be made in the USA after the move.

I would think it far more likely that FMIC would move certain models into the GAD line (China) than start producing in Mexico.

Please have your "reliable source" post some first-hand information. Otherwise you're just fanning the flames of what's already a difficult situation with the move back east.

Just my opinion.

For the record, I have forwarded the question about this to the GM at Kaman (New Hartford). I will let you know if he replies and what he says.

We are all passionate about Guild and sometimes the news is not always favorable. I know I'm a neewbie to the forum, but I feel I have information to share with fellow enthusiasts.

Fender doesn't always announce it's intentions to the world through press releases. As a dealer I have found that companies try to warn you about potential changes so you will be adequately stocked, or so you can unload products. I was yold a year or so ago to sell through Tacoma since models would be discontinued, and the line would be "revamped" and possibly moved offshore. That is on the horizon from what I hear.

Because of the move, many Guild USA models will be hard to get and some finishes will be discontinued. That is what I'm told. I guess we'll see how it plays out.

Guildgator,

First of all, I apologize for my snippy response. And, welcome to LTG.

But, let me be honest, too... This thread really irks me.

There are several Guild dealers here on the board, and none have piped up with this. Nor have the long-term cognoscenti.

I heard rumors about Taylor being purchased by FMIC last year after the european sales deal was penned. I heard this from informed sources, even. But, that was only a rumor and continues as such.

Anyway, if this "news" is true, a lot of people will be unhappy. It's certainly not unprecedented in the guitar world, but it sure is for Guild.

I will let you know if I hear anything back from New Hartford. The GM there was very excited about Guild when I spoke to him last month. We'll see...

Mexican tequilla is pretty good as I recall. Mexican Guilds would be tough to swallow...

At this point, little would surprise me about the future of Guild production. I don't pay attention to the Fender acoustic products out of Mexico, but there are some serious craftsmen there.

Never forget a conversation I had with someone from the company about a contemplated visit to Mexico to visit with some of those family businesses first hand. His response; "there's something scary about a guy who can make a world class instrument with a pocket knife!"

Well, it wouldn't surprise me.
Some tooling from Westerly did go to mexico, to fabricate parts for the short-lived Corona Guilds. I suppose it's worth a try to build the entire instrument in Mexico.
What do they have to loose ?
People buy a chinese guitar and consider it a guild, why not mexican ?

They sure sell alot of Mexican made Fenders. I remember in the late 80's early 90's when people preferred the Mexican stuff over the Japanese stuff. That didn't last long.

Got anything you are looking to unload? :D

I would give any LTGer a ridiculous price on a new Tacoma. However, I promised not to use this as a platform for selling my products. Better send me a personal message.

As for Guild, I never need to unload them, they sell themselves. :D And if it's a used Guild trade in, they always seem to end up at my house, at least for awhile.

They weren't far from Mexico when they were being built in Corona...

Knowing Fender as we do, who could be surprised? If they do as mentioned, my gut feel is Mexican produced Guilds will be about as collectible or respected as GADs. Maybe a gig/open mic/campfire guitar.

We know they've retooled the Ovation plant (acoustic or lectric?); here's hoping the Hartford operation puts out acoustics with similar quality to Westerly and Tacoma builts. I still have hope, but if true, I'm more concerned about Guild's future than I was...

So true, Dread... and that was considered to be Guild's dark age by most.

Speculation or not, MIM Guilds sounds very FMIC-esque.... certainly toes the line with their years of screwing up acoustic guitar building too. It is sort of baffling though... FMIC very successfully outsources Asian production (Japan & Korea for Fender + China for Squier) for electrics... to the point where the CIJ builds heavily compete with their American lines. Why they wouldn't just keep GAD in China and the rest in the US... well, who knows, but this is FMIC, a company that often defies logic!

Mexi-Guild or GAD, it's just an import that happens to say 'guild' on the headstock.

The Tacoma guitars were at least built in a guitar plant in this country, though those hands met the same fate as the westerly hands. Hard to believe that the ovation plant won't go away too.

Guildgator: Keeping guild trade-ins ? Now that's something to get excited about. A little bit of history at a good price.
I just got my hands on a 67 Mark1 ( hoboken) a few weeks ago, a nice little addition to the stable.

Woohoo!
LTG Cozumel road trip! $379 airfare from Arlington. I'll buy the tequila.

Actually, that's what I was thinking too.

I wouldn't mind a Guild factory in MX at all.
I'm not after a DV-4 or DV-6. But hey, they
could move some of the GAD production there
maybe.

We could go on factory tours. Tequila, beaches,
Senoritas, & all that. What's not to love?
