sacrilege?

I don't even have it yet and I'm wondering if I should fit some TV Jones in there...

Anyone done that here?

The thing standing between me and another Gretsch is the which pickup would I use to replace the 'Trons.

As much as I want to like them, I can't get the thump I like out of a stock Gretsch.

I am getting to same place with my Electromatic 5120. Either I'll sell it which I really don't want to do or drop some TV Jones Classics in it. For what I paid, it's a freaking unreal guitar.

Not a filtertron fan either. Try some P90-alikes!

Walter,

Do you have some specific recommendations? I was think about some TVs and coil tapping them. You rock and have cool guitars so take advice from you :)

Eh...Mac...thanks! I don't have specific recommendations as most of my guitars are old ones, and it's very hard to recommend something if I don't know what kind of thing you're after. (music styles/preferences, amp setup, etc...)

But for the kind of music I like and play, single coils work best in my experience - humbuckers are too dull and bassy, and don't have enough twang for my liking.

I wonder what a pair of GoldTones would sound like in a 5120. They're plenty twangy to my ears.

As much praise as TV Jones gets, I got to say, I was pretty disappointed in his Hilotrons. They sounded pretty good...but couldn't touch the originals that eventually obtained in my '67 Corvette. The TVs were terribly microphonic; the originals are not at all and sound WAY better IMO. Tom's a good guy and some of his stuff is very nice indeed...but I'm not a fan of his Hilotrons. YMMV, of course...
