Nah...no phase switch...'71 or '72...unless it was removed and the hole filled in before the refin...I think...but don't quote me on it.

Pickguard, headstock inlay, and TRC are all pre-'73 (at least). Almost definitely '71 or '72.

You know what ... that tailpiece looks like it's a little further back than it should be. I'm guessing that did have a Hagstrom on it. If you want take a measurement and I'll compare the bridge-tailpiece distance on mine. Or maybe that was intentional since the bridge has been swapped out.

It is about half an inch back further than it should be...

Thanks guys, so it sounds like this may have been equiped from the factory with a hagstrom, I always thought the tailpiece was too far back as well compared to other's I've seen. The bridge isn't original, I never got one with the guitar so this is a gotoh. I did take a closer look at the pots last night and found a code 00420 304-7016, don't know if that tells us anything.

Hello Sam,

It means that the pots were made during the 16th week of 1970, so the guitar must be younger than that. Actually, we already knew that, since it has the big HB-1 humbuckers, which were introduced at the end of 1970.

Sincerely,

Thanks Hans and everyone else for all the info. So now I at least know the year of my guitar.

Next step, look into having it painted correctly, I might actually stick with white.

Are you going to have the tailpiece moved as well? Might be a prime time to do it, if you were ever planning on it.

Well it seems to work fine where it is and I like ther tone I'm getting from the guitar so I wouldn't want to alter the sound by moving the tailpiece.

Yeah, it does look a bit farther back. I wonder where somebody scored an original style TP if it was a Hagstrom originally, though? Anyway, mine (a '71 by S/N) has the treble side of the TP lining up with the forward-most control knob and yours seems a bit farther back.

I actually think mine might have been one of those assembled-later ones, as it's got a '71 S/N but plastic TRC and the phase switch. Hans?

Anyway, if the finish is all there, you might consider just wet sanding and/or buffing it out to a smooth surface. Solid color is solid color and, if you can make it smooth, it'll look pretty decent.
