I've always been curious about those 3-pickup S70s.

Do they quack like a strat?

Yes, S-70 owners tell us more. I hear the pickups are a bit hotter than standard Strat fare & have a bit of a P90 feel?

It's more of a creamy distortion than the strat quack. I use to have one and I miss it. The Guildguy has one for sale, but $1,100 is just a "Touch Too Much" (I love that AC/DC song!!).

The S-70AD pictured earlier is mine, I also own a regular mahogany S-70.

I agree with all of this.

They don't quite do the Strat quack. The out-of-phase position is close, but not quite there.
Nor do they do the bell-like highs of a good Strat (or the ice-pick shrillness of a not so good one).

To my ears they have more in common with P90s than with typical Strat single coils.

With all the switching options they can do a wide range of sounds from dark and smooth to bright and biting.
I like them a lot.

Thanks beinhard. How do the ash & hog ones differ? Are either suited more or less for particular tone or styles?

To be honest, I hear very little if any difference.
With clean amp settings, I _think_ the ash sounds a bit thinner, but this could just as well be my brain playing tricks on me.
And differences in pickup adjustment could easily produce similar differences in tone.

Actually, I'm pretty sure I could not tell them apart in a blind test.

I know I cant. When it comes to the amplified tone on a solid body electric guitar, the type of wood the guitar body is made of doesn't make that much of a difference IMO. Sure some might resonant better and have better sustain, etc. I think the pickups, electronics and strings make 90% of it. IMO!!

It's a hard one to predict for sure. I have 4 S-100s, all with HB-1s & they all sound different, quite markedly in some cases. Of course they are huge similarities too & maybe a lot of it depends on how picky you want to get. Also I know I can tell the differences in a guitar a lot more when I play them than if I listen to someone else play them. I don't know if that is just a "feel" thing or if my senses are heightened when it's in my hands.

Thanks for your thoughts beinhard. The S-70 certainly seems like a unique beast. Damn, I think I want one...

I never wanted an S70. Hell, I always thought they were the pale "not as good" cousin to my coveted S300 growing up. Then someone had to say they sounded like P90s. Thanks a lot. :)

Yeah, ash is a very heavy, dense wood. All my ash guitars have been heavier than any of my other guitars.

Hello, hello! I have acquired an S70D without the microswitchs.
I'm looking for the original wiring diagram, so I can hear what this guitar is supposed to sound like.
I absolutely love Guild guitars and especially this one. Anybody know where I can find this info?
Thank you for your help!

Hello, Brother S70 owners.
I have an S70D that has been rewired, minus the micro switches.
Does anyone know where I can find the original wiring diagram for this guitar?
I appreciate your help.
Thank you, I love Guild guitars!

There are exceptions.
My ash S300-A (bought from Dave) is heavier than the mahogany S300-D or S70-D, but then there is the ash S300-AD that is the lightest of them all.

The weight difference between the two ash bodies is 900 grams!
